How to Get to the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz?

A mountain village in deep winter: jet, panoramic train, helicopter or car, each arrival is prepared with a fallback plan.

Last updated 5 October 2026 · 4 min read

In short

There are four ways to reach St. Moritz for the Snow Polo World Cup. By private jet, Engadin Airport, in Samedan, around five kilometres from the village, is reserved for business and general aviation; at 1,707 metres, it calls for crews used to mountain flying. By train, Zurich connects to St. Moritz with a change at Chur, then the Albula line, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a climb of around two hours. By helicopter, weather permitting, from Zurich or Milan. By chauffeur-driven car, over the mountain passes, equipped for winter. In late January, every arrival is planned with a fallback.

01

The short answer: arriving in the mountains, in deep winter

St. Moritz lies in the Upper Engadine, more than 1,800 metres up, at the end of valleys reached by mountain passes or by rail. That is its charm, and what calls for method: in late January, snow, wind and visibility can delay a flight or slow a road.

The answer is therefore not a mode of transport, but a plan: a main route, a fallback route, and margins. A flight planned for Samedan may be diverted; a train is often the more reliable option. We coordinate the whole journey, from your point of departure to the hotel door.

02

By private jet: Engadin Airport, in Samedan

Engadin Airport, in Samedan, is the natural arrival point for private aviation: around five kilometres from St. Moritz, it handles no commercial flights. Its runway, at an altitude of 1,707 metres, is 1,800 metres long; the valley approaches require crews qualified for this mountain airfield, and certain aircraft are subject to specific conditions there.

On the tournament weekend, slots and aircraft parking are planned early. We coordinate the flight, the welcome at the foot of the aircraft and the transfer, a few minutes' drive to the village. If the weather closes Samedan, the flight lands at a lowland airport — Zurich or another, depending on where you are flying from — and the journey continues by road or rail.

03

By train: Zurich, Chur and the Albula line

From Zurich, the train reaches St. Moritz with a change at Chur. The second part of the journey follows the Rhaetian Railway's Albula line, listed together with the Bernina line as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008: around two hours of viaducts, spiral tunnels and snow-covered valleys. From Zurich, the whole journey takes around three and a half to four hours depending on the connection.

It is often the more reliable arrival in winter, and a beautiful one. We book the seats, arrange the welcome in Zurich and in St. Moritz, and send the luggage on by road if you prefer to travel light. From Zermatt, the Glacier Express also reaches St. Moritz for those combining two resorts.

04

By helicopter and by chauffeur-driven car

The helicopter links Zurich, Milan or other points of departure to the Engadine in a fraction of the road time, depending on the weather and the day's clearances. It is an elegant solution, never a certainty in January: we always plan it with an alternative by road.

The chauffeur-driven car remains the flexible route: from Zurich over the passes, from Milan via the Maloja. The vehicle is equipped for winter, the chauffeur used to mountain roads, and the journey planned with margins. Once there, the same chauffeur handles the transfers between the hotel, the lake and the evening's tables.

Getting around on site: the lake, the village, the evenings

On site, distances are short, but winter lengthens them: icy slopes, evening dress, late returns. A dedicated chauffeur for the length of the stay takes care of the journeys to the lake, the drop-offs close to the tournament village and the returns after dinner. From the village, some journeys can be made on foot, with suitable footwear.

For groups, a second vehicle avoids waiting; for guests arriving separately, we coordinate each welcome. Our guide Where to Stay for the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz? explains how the choice of address removes a good share of the journeys.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Engadin Airport, in Samedan, around five kilometres from the village, reserved for business and general aviation. At 1,707 metres, it calls for crews qualified for mountain flying; in poor weather, the flight lands in the lowlands and the journey continues by road or rail.

Allow around three and a half to four hours from Zurich depending on the connection, with a change at Chur. The Chur–St. Moritz section, on the Albula line, takes around two hours.

It is a fast and beautiful option, but dependent on the day's weather. We always plan it with an alternative by road, so that the programme never rests on a single flying window.

Yes, with a vehicle equipped for winter and a driver used to the passes. We recommend a chauffeur: mountain roads in January demand attention, and parking is limited in the village on the tournament weekend.

It is the simple way to go from the hotel to the lake, then to the evening's tables, in evening dress and in the cold. A dedicated chauffeur for the length of the stay avoids waiting and takes care of late returns.

We activate the fallback plan prepared at the time of booking: landing at a lowland airport, then road or train to St. Moritz. That is why we prepare every arrival with margins, and set out the conditions of each service to you before any commitment.
