Venice Film Festival Dress Code: What to Wear on the Lido
A theatre that asks for formal attire, an island at the end of summer, boats to board: what the Mostra expects, and how to dress for the screenings, the dinners and the lagoon.

The Biennale recommends formal attire for screenings in the Sala Grande. In the evening, sober evening dress is a safe choice: a dark suit or dinner jacket for men, a long gown or evening wear for women. By day and in the other theatres, light elegance is enough. In late August – early September, it is hot and often humid on the Lido; bring a wrap for the boat home, and shoes that cope with landing stages and gangways. A stylist prepares each evening in advance.
The Sala Grande dress code: formal attire
The Biennale puts it simply: formal attire is recommended in the Sala Grande. For an evening screening, we advise sober evening dress — a dinner jacket or a dark suit with a tie or bow tie for men, a long gown or evening wear for women. For an afternoon screening, a suit or a smart dress is enough.
One does not dress for the red carpet: it is not guaranteed, even with an evening ticket. One dresses for the theatre, and for the dinner that follows.
| For whom | Evening screening | Daytime screening |
|---|---|---|
| Men | Dinner jacket or dark suit, tie or bow tie | Suit, shirt; tie optional |
| Women | Long gown or evening wear | Smart dress or ensemble |
| Everyone | Shoes that cope with landing stages and gangways | A light jacket for the theatres' air conditioning |

Late summer on the lagoon: think of the boat
In late August – early September, the days are hot and often humid on the Lido. In the evening, the boat crossing cools things down: a wrap or a light jacket should be brought for the way back. Fabrics that do not crease — heavy silk, crêpe, linen blends — hold up better through the day.
You step on and off boats, and walk on wooden landing stages: very fine heels cope poorly, and an overly long dress is lifted by hand. A stylist helps you reconcile elegance and terrain, without giving anything up.
Dressing for the rest of the stay
By day on the Lido, seaside elegance: linen, cotton, light colours, flat shoes. For screenings in the other theatres, smart dress is enough. In Venice, for a fine table, smart dress and a jacket; for a private dinner in a palazzo, the dress code is decided with you and announced to the guests.
In Venice's churches, if you visit them, shoulders and knees are covered: a wrap in your bag settles the question.
| Moment | Dress | To plan |
|---|---|---|
| Evening screening in the Sala Grande | Sober evening dress | Hair and make-up timed to the hour of the boat |
| Daytime screening | Smart dress | A jacket for the air conditioning |
| Dinner in Venice | Smart dress, jacket | A wrap for the crossing home |
| A day on the Lido or on a boat | Linen, cotton, flat shoes | Protection from the sun |

The stylist and the fittings
A dedicated stylist prepares your looks before you arrive: a selection of pieces for your evenings, fittings in the suite, quick alterations, and for an evening screening, hair and make-up timed to the hour of the boat. Private appointments in boutiques in Venice are requested in advance and depend on each house.
We never present styling as a way into a theatre: it serves your own evenings.
What the Mostra is not
The Mostra is not a costume party: it is a film festival, and dress is judged by the standard of a theatre and a dinner. Red carpet photographs circulate every evening; dress, however, is chosen for the evening as lived, not for the picture.
Our Venice Film Festival VIP page details what we compose, and our guide How to Attend the Venice Film Festival recalls how tickets are bought — and why invitations cannot be.
