Serpentine Summer Party Dress Code
An open-air evening, on the grass, at the start of the London summer: what is known of the evening's codes, what is not, and how to prepare the week's looks.
Last updated 5 October 2026 · 3 min read
The Serpentine does not publish a dress code for the Summer Party on its public page: any guidance, when there is some, appears on the invitation. What is known of the setting guides the attire: an open-air evening in Kensington Gardens, around the Pavilion and on the gallery's lawn, at the end of June. Guests, drawn from art, architecture and fashion, often wear considered summer evening attire rather than classic gala dress. Practical points matter: shoes that cope with grass, a layer for the cool of the evening, something in case of a shower. For the week around it, the codes are those of London in season.
What is known, and what is not
The Serpentine presents the Summer Party as an invitation-only evening, without publishing a dress code on its public page. Any instructions appear on the invitation itself: that is what counts. We do not claim to know a code the institution does not publish.
What is known, on the other hand, is the setting: an open-air evening in the gardens, around an architect's pavilion, bringing together figures from art, architecture, fashion and business. Attire is considered for this place as much as for the occasion.

A summer evening, on the grass
The grass first: fine heels sink into it. Broader heels, elegant sandals or refined flat shoes see the evening through more comfortably. For men, leather shoes that do not mind a slightly damp lawn.
Then the weather: in late June, London evenings are long and often mild, but the air cools and a shower is never ruled out. A light jacket, a shawl, a stole, a discreet umbrella left with the chauffeur are all part of the attire.
The spirit of the evening
The Summer Party gathers a crowd that looks at fashion with an artist's eye. One often sees designer pieces, architectural cuts, summer fabrics, clear colours or a very crisp black — less a code than a form of attention. A well-cut dark suit, with or without a tie, and a long or midi summer dress naturally have their place.
Our advice: summer evening attire, right for a garden, that holds up through two or three hours standing and a few steps on the grass. The table below summarises the guidelines.
| Moment | For her | For him | To plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| The evening | Long or midi summer dress, designer piece | Well-cut dark suit, light shirt | Shoes suited to grass, a layer for the evening |
| Pavilion visit | Polished daywear, flat shoes | Light trousers, unlined jacket | A morning outdoors, in sun or shower |
| Dinners of the week | Evening wear to suit the house | A jacket often expected in the grand dining rooms | Each house's rules apply |

Attire for the week
The week around the evening follows the codes of London in season. The grand dining rooms of Mayfair often expect a jacket in the evening; hotel bars remain elegant; the visit to the Pavilion and the galleries, by day, calls for polished but comfortable attire, for walking in the gardens.
In late June, other fixtures of the season have their own written rules. If your stay coincides with one, we prepare the corresponding attire, in keeping with its regulations.
How we prepare the looks
A dedicated stylist prepares the looks for each evening before you arrive, from your own wardrobe or pieces chosen with you; fittings and alterations take place in your suite. On Summer Party night, the outfit is pressed, shoes suited to the grass are ready, and the car drops you as close as possible.
We promise no access to the evening: if you are invited, we prepare the attire; if not, we prepare it for your own evening, elsewhere in the city. Our Serpentine Summer Party VIP page presents the whole stay.
Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily. Guests often wear considered summer evening attire, a designer piece or a well-cut dark suit, rather than classic gala dress. Should the invitation give guidance, it takes precedence.
Broader heels, elegant sandals or refined flat shoes; fine heels sink into the lawn. For men, leather shoes that cope with slightly damp grass.
In late June, a shower is always possible in London. A light jacket or a stole, and an umbrella left with the chauffeur, are usually enough. We follow the forecast and adjust the attire the day before.
In polished, comfortable daywear: the visit takes place outdoors, in the gardens, often on foot from Kensington or Knightsbridge.
