How does New York Fashion Week work? The complete guide

The CFDA calendar, invitations, neighbourhoods and logistics: the full briefing on the six days when Manhattan lives to the rhythm of the collections.

Last updated 5 October 2026 · 8 min read

In short

New York Fashion Week gathers American fashion twice a year, in February and September. It is organised by the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), which owns the Fashion Calendar and sets the schedule of each edition; shows and presentations are spread across Manhattan, and sometimes Brooklyn. The next edition, devoted to the autumn–winter 2027 collections, takes place in February 2027 — the precise dates are published by the CFDA a few weeks before. The shows are professional, invitation-only events: there is no public box office, and invitations — nominative and non-transferable — cannot be bought. A private visitor experiences the week differently: Madison Avenue and SoHo, personal shopping, the great tables, evenings and invitations through private channels where possible, always subject to availability.

01

What is New York Fashion Week?

New York Fashion Week is the moment when American fashion gathers in Manhattan: for about six days, designers, buyers, press and clients converge on the city to discover the collections. It is organised by the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), which owns the Fashion Calendar and has been the schedule's sole organiser since October 2014, with a formal application process for designers. Shows and presentations are spread across the city — there is no single venue.

The reference edition of this guide is February 2027, devoted to the autumn–winter 2027 collections. The CFDA publishes the precise calendar a few weeks beforehand, and it still moves afterwards: we therefore speak of February 2027, without a day, until the schedule is settled. It is a winter week, during which the whole city — Madison Avenue, Fifth Avenue, SoHo, Tribeca, the Meatpacking District — lives for a few days to the rhythm of the collections.

Because the week spills far beyond the show venues: windows dressed for the season, showrooms and presentations, boutiques in full movement, dinners from Le Bernardin to Torrisi, private evenings. It is that city, as much as the runways, that a private visitor comes for — and it is that city this guide teaches you to compose.

Two editions a year, eight decades of history

New York holds two editions a year: February for the autumn–winter collections, September for spring–summer. The most recent ran from 10 to 15 September 2026, with around seventy shows and presentations on the CFDA's preliminary schedule; the previous February edition, from 11 to 16 February 2026, counted more than sixty.

History explains the format. In 1943, when the war made travel to the Paris shows impossible, the publicist Eleanor Lambert created a "Press Week" in New York; in 1993, the CFDA gathered the shows under tents in Bryant Park; in 2010 they moved to Lincoln Center, before scattering across the city. February offers a compact, wintry week — demanding on logistics, generous in interiors. The table below sets out the landmarks.

How an edition works: the CFDA calendar and invitations

Each edition is built around the calendar published by the CFDA a few weeks before the event: runway shows and presentations from morning to night, in venues scattered across Manhattan and sometimes Brooklyn — lofts, galleries and studios in SoHo, Tribeca, Chelsea, the Meatpacking District or Midtown, cited by way of illustration. The geography changes every season, some designers show the day before the calendar opens, and exact addresses are often confirmed only with the invitation.

It should be said plainly: the shows on the CFDA calendar are professional, invitation-only events — press, buyers, clients, invited guests. There is no public box office, and invitations are nominative and non-transferable, issued by each designer or brand: they are not for sale, and any "runway ticket" offered online should raise immediate suspicion. Our guide How to attend New York Fashion Week sets out the legitimate routes, and our page New York Fashion Week runway shows & invitations explains how we work — requests transmitted through private relationships, after review of the client's profile, never with a promise.

Around the CFDA calendar gravitates a second calendar, that of the brands and showrooms: presentations by appointment, collections shown privately, boutique events, dinners, late evenings. It is this second calendar that gives the week its density — and it is on this calendar that a private stay is built.

04

How do you experience the week as a private visitor?

The private experience of New York Fashion Week does not hinge on an invitation card: it is composed. For a few days, the boutiques of Madison Avenue, Fifth Avenue and SoHo dress their windows for the season and receive their clients in private salons and showrooms. Personal shopping then takes on a singular dimension: appointments with the brands' teams, access to pieces subject to availability, a winter wardrobe composed with a stylist — our page Personal shopping during New York Fashion Week details these formats.

Then there is the city and its rituals: the movement outside the show venues downtown, the great tables where the industry gathers — Le Bernardin, The Polo Bar, Torrisi, cited by way of illustration —, late hours at The Nines or Bemelmans Bar, private dinners, and the evenings that extend the shows. After-parties and brand events belong to private channels: possible to compose subject to availability and validation, never bookable like a restaurant — our page New York Fashion Week after-parties frames this honestly.

A successful stay comes down to orchestration: a suite that serves as headquarters for fittings, a chauffeur who knows the Manhattan grid in February, tables booked at the right hours, a stylist at the right moment. A single point of contact composing the whole changes the nature of the week.

05

Planning your stay: accommodation, transport, budget

Accommodation first: during Fashion Week, the suites of New York's grand hotels — The Carlyle on the Upper East Side, Aman New York and The Plaza on Fifth Avenue, Casa Cipriani in the Financial District, cited by way of illustration — are secured well in advance, sometimes with a minimum stay, on quotation according to the address, the suite category and the length of stay. Townhouses and privatised penthouses, also on quotation, are the alternative for those who entertain. Our guide Where to stay during New York Fashion Week compares the neighbourhoods one by one.

Transport next: the shows are scattered across Manhattan, crosstown journeys are slow and Midtown seizes up at rush hour. A dedicated chauffeur timed to the minute, a second car held in relay on the dense days, arrival via Teterboro for private aviation — from Le Bourget for those flying from Paris: our guide Getting around New York during Fashion Week details this mechanism. Budget finally: our guide How much does a VIP New York Fashion Week cost details what moves every line, with three typical stay scenarios.

Then there are the codes: the week has its own sartorial language, different for a show, a dinner or a party, and February adds the question of the coat — our guide to the New York Fashion Week dress code sets out the conventions. And one golden rule throughout: everything that matters is booked early. At three months out, you still compose; at six weeks, you settle by default.

The essentials

New York Fashion Week is organised by the CFDA, which owns the Fashion Calendar, with shows and presentations spread across Manhattan; the next edition, devoted to the autumn–winter 2027 collections, takes place in February 2027, its precise dates published a few weeks before. The shows are invitation-only — nominative, non-transferable, never for sale. The private experience is composed elsewhere and everywhere: personal shopping and showrooms, Madison Avenue and SoHo, great tables, evenings through private channels subject to availability, all resting on logistics timed to the minute. TGZ Conciergerie, an independent house unaffiliated with the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), with any fashion house or brand or with the organisers of New York Fashion Week shows and events, and holding no official status, orchestrates the entire stay — grand hotel or townhouse, chauffeurs, styling, tables, evenings — with the precision this week demands. Every stay is on quotation, with availability and conditions confirmed before any commitment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The next edition, devoted to the autumn–winter 2027 collections, takes place in February 2027. The CFDA publishes the precise calendar a few weeks before, and it can still move afterwards — we confirm the days as soon as they are settled. For reference, the previous February edition ran from 11 to 16 February 2026, the most recent edition from 10 to 15 September 2026.

No. The shows on the CFDA calendar are professional, invitation-only events — press, buyers, clients, invited guests. Invitations are nominative and non-transferable: they are not for sale, and any "runway ticket" offered online should raise immediate suspicion. A request can sometimes be transmitted through legitimate private channels, subject to availability and after review of the client's profile, without any promise.

The CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), which owns the Fashion Calendar and has been the schedule's sole organiser since acquiring it in October 2014; designers apply to appear on it. The shows themselves are produced by the designers, each in the venue of its choosing, which explains the week's geographical spread.

Across Manhattan, and sometimes in Brooklyn: there has been no single venue since the years of Bryant Park (from 1993) and Lincoln Center (from 2010). Shows and presentations are held in lofts, galleries and studios — SoHo, Tribeca, Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, Midtown, cited by way of illustration. The map changes every season and exact addresses are often confirmed with the invitation — hence the importance of impeccably planned logistics.

September if you are looking for a milder city, still lived partly outdoors; February if you prefer a compact, wintry week, lived in interiors — the grand hotels, the tables, the showrooms. The next edition is February 2027. In both cases, accommodation and chauffeurs are booked several months ahead, and February calls for logistics that allow for cold and snow.

Every stay is on quotation, because it is composed: a couple over three days in a suite with a chauffeur and fine tables does not call for the same quote as a week in a townhouse with receptions. What moves the cost: the length of stay, the address and category of accommodation, the number of chauffeur and styling days, the size of the party, the transatlantic journey and the timing of the booking. Our budget guide breaks down every line.

No. TGZ Conciergerie is an independent house, unaffiliated with the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), with any fashion house or brand, or with the organisers of New York Fashion Week shows and events, and holding no official status. We compose stays — accommodation, chauffeurs, styling, tables, evenings — and pursue requests through legitimate private channels, always subject to availability and never promising what rests with the designers.
