Where to Stay for Royal Ascot?

The countryside around the racecourse, Windsor, or London less than an hour away: three approaches to an address for a week in June.

Last updated 5 October 2026 · 4 min read

In short

For Royal Ascot, three approaches to accommodation stand out. Closest, the Berkshire and Surrey countryside: country houses let for the week, or hotels such as Coworth Park, a few kilometres from the racecourse — cited for illustration. A little further, Windsor and the Thames Valley: the castle town, some ten kilometres away, and houses such as Cliveden House, in Taplow, around twenty — cited for illustration. Finally London, some fifty minutes away by train or car, for those combining the races with the city. For the June week, addresses close to the racecourse go from the winter. Each option is prepared on quotation.

01

The overall answer: distance is measured in traffic

Ascot Racecourse lies in the heart of wooded countryside, on the edge of Windsor Great Park, some fifty minutes from London. On the map, everything is close; in practice, on race days, the roads to the racecourse fill up in the late morning and again in the evening.

The right criterion is therefore not distance alone, but rhythm: arriving before the procession without rushing, going back to change before dinner, hosting at home. Three approaches to an address answer three ways of spending the week.

02

The countryside around Ascot: country houses and private lets

It is a thoroughly English way to spend the week. Around Ascot, Sunningdale or Virginia Water, country houses are let for the duration of the meeting, with household staff, a chef and a garden. Guests are received after the racing, a lunch is arranged before the procession, and the week is lived without depending on a reservation.

As for hotels, Coworth Park, a few kilometres from the racecourse, is one example of these country houses turned hotels — cited for illustration. These addresses are the first to go for the June week, often with a minimum stay.

03

Windsor and the Thames Valley

Some ten kilometres from the racecourse, Windsor offers the base of a small historic town, at the foot of the castle, on the banks of the Thames. It has hotels, restaurants and walks for the days without racing.

Further along the valley, Cliveden House, in Taplow, Buckinghamshire, around twenty kilometres away, illustrates these great houses turned hotels, with their grounds above the river — cited for illustration. It is a choice for a longer stay, combining the racing with the English countryside.

04

London: the city and the races

For those also coming for London — a dinner, an exhibition, meetings — staying in town remains a serious option. The train links Waterloo to Ascot in around fifty minutes on average, and the station is a few minutes' walk from the racecourse; by chauffeur-driven car, allow longer on race days.

The grand hotels of Mayfair, Belgravia or Knightsbridge let you leave after breakfast and be back for dinner in town. A helicopter shortens the journey when timing is tight.

05

Criteria, minimum stays and timing: how to decide

Three criteria settle it. The number of race days, first: for one day, London is enough; for three or five, the countryside avoids the back-and-forth. How you will use it, next: living in a hotel with continuous service, or hosting at home. The programme, last: racing alone, or an English week with London and the countryside.

Timing is the rule without exception: private lets and hotels close to the racecourse go from the winter for the June week, often with a minimum stay. The table below summarises the choice.
