How to Get to the Salzburg Festival?

An airport at the city's edge, two capitals a few hours away, and a street where cars drop off outside the halls: every arrival is planned before curtain-up.

In short

Salzburg is easy to reach. W. A. Mozart airport lies some three to four kilometres from the centre and handles scheduled and private flights. By train, the central station is linked to Vienna in around 2h25 on the fastest services, and to Munich in around 1h30; Munich and Vienna airports are about three hours away by public transport, according to the festival. In town, the old town is explored on foot; in the evening, cars may drop their passengers in the Hofstallgasse, outside the halls, an hour before the performance, without parking there. The nearest car park is the Altstadtgarage. The essential point: arrive thirty minutes before curtain-up.

01

The overall answer: arrive thirty minutes early

Every evening is organised around one time: curtain-up. The festival recommends arriving thirty minutes early; latecomers are admitted when possible, but some productions allow no late entry. Coats, jackets and umbrellas go to the cloakroom, which is free.

The right arrival is therefore not necessarily the fastest on paper, but the most predictable. We coordinate everything, from the airport to the door of the hall, with margins.

02

By air and by private jet

Salzburg's W. A. Mozart airport lies a few kilometres west of the centre: around ten minutes by road outside busy periods. It handles scheduled flights and private aviation; in summer, slots are planned early.

Munich and Vienna airports offer more international connections; the festival places them about three hours away by public transport. With a chauffeur, Munich is reached by motorway; we coordinate the flight, the welcome and the transfer.

03

By train: Vienna, Munich and the central station

Salzburg central station is connected to Europe's main lines. The fastest services reach Vienna in around 2h25 and Munich in around 1h30. A chauffeur meets you on arrival for the few minutes to the hotel.

It is often the most pleasant arrival for those combining Salzburg with Vienna or Bavaria; we book the seats and arrange the luggage.

04

In town, in the evening: on foot, by car or by bus

The old town is explored on foot, and that is often the simplest way to reach the halls from a central hotel. By car, the festival allows drop-off in the Hofstallgasse, outside the Festival District, an hour before performances, without parking; the nearest car park is the Altstadtgarage, which is paid.

The performance ticket doubles as a bus ticket on the city network during the festival, and a summer night bus runs until 0:30, under the conditions of the 2026 edition. For evenings that end late, and for dinner after the curtain, a chauffeur remains the calmest solution.

Days without performances

The days belong to the city and its surroundings: the Salzkammergut lakes, the mountains, an excursion to Vienna or Bavaria. The same chauffeur takes you, then brings you back in time to change before the evening.

Our guide Where to Stay for the Salzburg Festival? explains how the choice of address removes a good share of the evening journeys.
