Where to Stay for the Salzburg Festival?

Walking home after the curtain, or waking to a lake: two logics of address for a festival summer.

Last updated 6 October 2026 · 3 min read

In short

For the Salzburg Festival, two logics of accommodation emerge. Closest in, the old town and the banks of the Salzach: hotels a few minutes' walk from the Festival District, such as the Goldener Hirsch, on the Getreidegasse opposite the halls, or the Sacher Salzburg, on the banks of the Salzach with views of the old town and the fortress — cited for illustration. Further out, the Salzkammergut lakes, east of the city: lakeside hotels and houses rented for several weeks, with a chauffeur for performance evenings. For July and August, old-town addresses go early. Every option is prepared on quotation.

01

The overall answer: distance is measured after the curtain

Salzburg is a small city: the Festival District lies at the heart of the old town, at the foot of the Mönchsberg, and most venues can be reached on foot. In the evening, the question is not getting there but getting back: an opera performance ends late, and one likes to dine afterwards.

The right criterion therefore lies in the rhythm of the stay: a few closely spaced evenings over a week, or a longer summer punctuated by quiet days. Two logics of address answer them.

02

The old town and the banks of the Salzach

This is the simplest way to experience the festival: the hotel a few minutes from the halls, dinner in the old town after the performance, the walk home. The Goldener Hirsch, on the Getreidegasse, stands opposite the Festival District — cited for illustration.

On the other bank, the Sacher Salzburg lines the Salzach and looks onto the old town and the fortress — cited for illustration. A few minutes' walk across the bridges separates the right bank from the halls. These addresses are the first to go for the summer, often as soon as the programme is published.

03

The Salzkammergut lakes

East of Salzburg stretches the Salzkammergut, a region of lakes and mountains. For those coming for several weeks, or with family, a house rented by a lake, with staff, or a lakeside hotel offers quiet days: swimming, boating, walking, then the city in the evening.

This choice calls for a chauffeur on performance evenings, and margins on the road home. It suits a long stay with a few spaced-out evenings better than a week of back-to-back performances.

04

A house of your own, in town or nearby

For a group, a family or a stay of several weeks, a fine apartment in town or a house nearby can replace the hotel: you entertain there, dine after the curtain, and live the summer without depending on a reservation.

We select these houses for their location, their space and their service — staff, chef, chauffeur — and tell you when a hotel remains simpler.

05

Criteria, minimum stays and timing: how to decide

Three criteria settle it. The number of evenings first: for a few close evenings, the old town is the obvious choice; for a whole summer, the lakes regain the advantage. Then use: living in a hotel with continuous service, or entertaining at home. And finally the programme: the festival alone, or the festival combined with lakes and mountains.

Timing is the rule: old-town hotels go early for July and August, often with a minimum stay. It is simpler to book broadly, then adjust to the evenings obtained after ticket allocation. The table below summarises the choice.

Frequently asked questions

As soon as the programme is published, at the end of the year, and often before. Old-town hotels go early for July and August; it is simpler to book broadly, then adjust to the evenings obtained.

From the old town and the banks of the Salzach, yes: the Festival District is at the heart of the city, and most venues are a few minutes apart.

For a long stay with a few spaced-out evenings, yes. For a week of back-to-back performances, the old town avoids repeated evening journeys. Either way, we arrange a chauffeur.

Often during the festival, especially in the old town. Rented houses are generally booked for several nights, or even several weeks. It is a factor to build in from the start.

Yes, in town or nearby, with staff, chef and chauffeur if you wish. It is the right answer for entertaining, or for a stay of several weeks.

It is set on quotation, depending on the address, the room category or the size of the house, the number of nights and the services added — staff, chef, chauffeur. Availability and conditions are confirmed before any commitment.

No. The establishments are cited for illustration, with no partnership claimed. TGZ Conciergerie is an independent house, with no affiliation with the Salzburger Festspiele and no official status; we book through our own channels, on quotation.
