Bal des Débutantes Dress Code: What to Wear?
A couture gown, white tie, instructions given to families: what the evening asks of each person, and how to dress for the Parisian days around it.

At the Bal des Débutantes, each debutante is dressed by a couture or haute couture house, within the framework set by the organisation; the escorts wear white tie — tailcoat, white waistcoat and white bow tie. For parents and relatives, instructions are sent by the organiser: evening dress in keeping with an evening at which the escorts wear white tie. Around the ball, Paris at the end of November calls for winter elegance: an evening coat, shoes chosen for the journeys, smart attire for the great tables. A tailor prepares the white tie, a stylist the family's outfits, in advance.
The debutante's gown
This is what sets Le Bal apart: each debutante is dressed by a couture or haute couture house, each house dressing one debutante. The gown is decided and fitted within the framework set by the organisation, with the house that dresses her.
We do not intervene on the gown, and we name no house. What we arrange are the journeys to the fittings, a room where the gown waits safely, and time for the young woman to dress without hurrying.

The escort's white tie
The escorts wear white tie, a highly codified form of dress: tailcoat, trousers with braid, stiff-fronted shirt, white waistcoat and white bow tie, patent shoes. It is not a dinner jacket: white tie is distinct from black tie.
White tie is prepared in advance. A Parisian tailor takes measurements, arranges fittings and alterations at the hotel, or adjusts a suit brought with you. Detail matters: the length of the sleeves, the fall of the tails, the height of the waistcoat, which must not show below the coat.
What parents and relatives wear
For parents, instructions are sent by the organiser to the invited families; we advise you to keep to them. Failing any clarification, we advise the father who dances the opening waltz to match the escorts' attire, and the mother to wear a long evening gown.
A stylist can prepare the family's outfits before you arrive: a selection to your taste, fittings and alterations in your suite, hair and make-up timed to the hour of departure. Private appointments in boutiques, in Paris, are requested in advance and depend on each house.

Dressing for Paris at the end of November
The days around the ball call for winter elegance. For dinner in a palace, smart attire is in keeping with the house; for the evening journeys, an evening coat or a warm stole, as Paris is cold at the end of November; for the days of preparation, comfortable clothes, easy to take off before a fitting.
| Moment | Attire | To plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Le Bal | According to the table above | An evening coat for the journey |
| Gastronomic dinner | Smart attire, a jacket for men | Each restaurant's customs |
| Days of preparation | Comfortable daywear | Flat shoes for the debutante between appointments |
| Sunday in Paris | Elegant daywear | A warm coat, Paris is cold at the end of November |
Jewellery and accessories
The debutantes' jewellery is, likewise, provided for within the organisation's framework. For relatives, restraint serves the evening: the debutante is at the centre.
For the accessories of white tie — shirt studs, cufflinks, a pocket watch or not — the tailor will advise you. Our guide Preparing for the Bal des Débutantes details the calendar of fittings, and our page Bal des Débutantes VIP presents the whole stay.
