What is the dress code at the Cannes Film Festival?

Black tie, evening gowns, Riviera daywear: the right wardrobe for every moment, from gala premiere to lunch on the Croisette.

In short

The Cannes Film Festival dress code comes down to one rule: for evening gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, evening dress is compulsory — black tie with a bow tie for men, an evening gown for women — while daytime calls simply for elegant attire. High heels are not a regulatory requirement — flexibility was formally acknowledged after the 2015 controversy — and selfies have been banned on the red-carpet steps since 2018. Across the rest of the fortnight — lunches, beach clubs, charity galas — each event sets its own code, stated on the invitation.

The rule in brief: formal by night, relaxed by day

The Cannes Film Festival — whose 80th edition runs from 11 to 22 May 2027 at the Palais des Festivals — operates on two sartorial registers. By night, evening dress is compulsory for gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière: it is a condition of entry, checked at the foot of the steps. By day, the requirement eases to elegant attire, in the spirit of the Riviera.

That daily shift shapes the entire fortnight. A typical Cannes day moves through three wardrobes — the afternoon screening, the evening gala, the party that follows — and should be planned accordingly: less a question of clothes than of logistics, with a return to the suite to change between each act.

Gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière: evening dress required

For the ascent of the 24 steps and the evening gala screenings, the code is formal: black tie with a bow tie for men, an evening gown for women. The Grand Théâtre Lumière red carpet is among the most photographed spaces in the world and protocol is enforced — attire judged insufficient can mean being turned away, however valid the invitation.

Two points are worth knowing. High heels are not a regulatory requirement: flexibility was acknowledged after the 2015 controversy, when guests in flat shoes were reportedly turned away — an elegant, dressed flat shoe is accepted today. And since 2018, selfies have been banned on the steps: the red carpet is climbed with the telephone put away.

Bear in mind, finally, that gala invitations are nominative and non-transferable: our Red carpet & gala screenings page sets out the legitimate routes — partners, fashion and jewellery houses, production companies — always subject to availability and eligibility.

By day: screenings, the Croisette and lunch

By day, Cannes dresses in relaxed Riviera elegance: linen and cotton, pale colours, an unstructured jacket, sunglasses and a panama worn without apology. For afternoon screenings, elegant attire is expected — a jacket advisable for men, no tie required; a day dress or polished ensemble for women.

Lunch sets the tone of the middle of the day: on the private beaches of the Croisette palace hotels or at a table in Le Suquet, the standard is summer chic — never beachwear. The practical rule matters as much as the style: the Croisette is covered on foot during the festival, and a comfortable, broken-in shoe beats a new pair worn on the wrong day.

Parties, beach clubs and charity galas: every event sets its code

Beyond the steps, the Cannes night splinters into a constellation of events — maison dinners, production parties, receptions in villas and aboard yachts — and each sets its own code, stated on the invitation: anything from summer cocktail to strict black tie. The only true mistake is dressing before reading the card.

The great charity galas — such as the amfAR gala at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, cited by way of illustration — impose the most formal register of the fortnight: strict black tie, gala gowns, high jewellery. Access is by tables and donations, by invitation and subject to eligibility; our guide How to attend the Cannes Film Festival sets out those routes candidly.

For gentlemen: the wardrobe of the fortnight

The foundation is the dinner jacket: black or midnight blue, satin or grosgrain lapels, a self-tie bow tie. If several galas are on the programme, a second dinner jacket spares the pressing shuttle between evenings. Around it, the fortnight takes shape: dress shirts with wing or classic collars, cufflinks, immaculate patent or black Oxford shoes, a cummerbund if no waistcoat.

The underestimated point is alterations. A dinner jacket must fit precisely — shoulders, waist, hem to the millimetre — and tailors' lead times lengthen as May approaches. Book fittings several weeks ahead, or draw on our express-alterations network in Cannes; a pale linen suit and a day jacket complete the wardrobe for the Croisette.

For ladies: gowns, jewellery, and hair and make-up in the suite

For evening galas, the floor-length gown remains the safe register of the Grand Théâtre Lumière; a finely made cocktail dress suits screenings and less formal parties. The real constraint is arithmetic: a Cannes fortnight can hold several dressed evenings, and the wardrobe is best planned as a sequence — each look with its accessories, its shoes, its stole against the evening chill.

Jewellery is arranged in advance: we organise private presentations through our partner jewellers — loan or acquisition, priced on request and cited by way of illustration — with close-protection coordination where appropriate. Hair and make-up happen in the suite, timed backwards from the red-carpet call; our guide Where to stay for the Cannes Film Festival explains why the right suite changes everything.

TGZ personal styling: a wardrobe, orchestrated

Our personal styling service treats the fortnight as a production: a dedicated stylist builds the wardrobe in advance — sourcing pieces, gowns and dinner jackets, accessories — then fittings take place in your suite in Cannes, alterations included. Throughout the festival, pressing and express alterations run continuously, so every look is ready at the appointed hour.

For full stays, the festival trunk captures the spirit of the service: your wardrobe is prepared garment bag by garment bag, shipped and unpacked in your suite before you arrive — then shipped home after the closing weekend. Everything is priced on request, according to the number of evenings and the scale of the wardrobe; our guide How much does a VIP Cannes Film Festival cost gives the orders of magnitude.

The essentials

By night at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, evening dress is compulsory — black tie and bow tie, evening gown — and entry can be refused without it. High heels are not a regulatory requirement, a flexibility acknowledged since the 2015 controversy, and selfies have been banned on the steps since 2018. By day, relaxed Riviera elegance is enough; come evening, every party, beach club and charity gala sets its own code, to be checked on the invitation. Book alterations early, plan the wardrobe as a sequence across the fortnight — and let a dedicated stylist, in-suite fittings and express pressing absorb the rest.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes, for evening gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière: black tie with a bow tie for men, an evening gown for women. Attire is checked at the foot of the steps, and dress judged insufficient can mean being turned away even with a valid invitation. By day, the requirement eases to elegant attire.

No. High heels are not a regulatory requirement, and flexibility was acknowledged after the 2015 controversy, when guests in flat shoes were reportedly refused entry. An elegant, dressed flat shoe is accepted today — the criterion is the evening dress as a whole, not the height of the heel.

No. Selfies have been banned on the steps of the Palais des Festivals since 2018, the Festival judging that they slowed and disordered the ascent. The red carpet is climbed with the telephone put away; accredited photographers cover the moment, and guests appear on the official images of the evening.

Elegant attire in the Riviera register: a light jacket advisable for men, no tie required; a day dress or polished ensemble for women. Linen, cotton and pale colours belong; beachwear never does at screenings. Choose comfortable shoes — Cannes is covered on foot during the festival.
