What Is the Salzburg Festival Dress Code?

No written rules, but a well-kept custom: evening attire, traditional dress, and what changes between a premiere and a morning concert.

Last updated 6 October 2026 · 3 min read

In short

The Salzburg Festival has no written dress code. The festival simply says it looks forward to welcoming its audience in festive, elegant evening attire. The custom, however, is well kept: a dark suit or dinner jacket for men; an evening or cocktail dress, an elegant trouser suit or a jumpsuit for women; premieres are dressier, with dinner jackets and long gowns not uncommon, though not required. Traditional dress — dirndl, Tracht jacket and suit — has been welcome since the festival's early days, on a par with evening wear. Jeans, shorts, T-shirts and trainers are avoided. Coats and umbrellas go to the cloakroom.

01

The overall answer: a custom, not a rule

In Salzburg, nobody checks your attire at the door, and no rules set it. The festival only says it looks forward to welcoming its audience in festive, elegant evening attire. Yet the audience willingly dresses up: it comes for the whole evening, from the foyer to the dinner that follows.

The right attire depends on the evening: an opera premiere at the Grosses Festspielhaus does not call for the same thing as a late-morning concert at the Mozarteum or an open-air evening on the Domplatz.

02

In the evening: dinner jacket, dark suit, evening gown

For men, a dark suit with shirt and tie is the basis for every evening; the dinner jacket is common for evening opera, and even more so for premieres, where white tie is not unknown. Shoes are formal and polished.

For women, an evening or cocktail dress is the safest choice; a knee-length dress, an elegant trouser suit, a tailored suit or a jumpsuit are just as suitable. Long gowns are seen mostly at premieres. A stole or light jacket is useful for the way out: summer evenings can turn cool, especially after a storm.

Traditional dress: dirndl and Tracht

This is a Salzburg particularity: since the festival's early days, traditional Austrian dress has been considered as appropriate as evening wear. A finely made dirndl, a Tracht jacket and a traditional suit are seen every evening, premieres included.

Traditional dress is chosen with care: the fabric, the cut, and the way the dirndl's apron is tied, which follows local custom. We arrange appointments with the city's craftsmen, fittings and alterations, to be planned a few days before your first evening.

04

Open-air evenings and summer weather

On the Domplatz, the play performed before the cathedral is given in the open air; in bad weather, the performance moves to the Grosses Festspielhaus. Bring an extra layer and steady shoes for the cobblestones.

Indoors, coats, jackets and umbrellas must be left at the cloakroom, which is free, for safety reasons; bulky luggage is not accepted. The chauffeur keeps on board whatever should not come in.

05

What to avoid

Jeans, shorts, T-shirts and trainers have no place in the evening. Nothing forbids them in writing, but they stand out in an audience dressed for the evening.

One last piece of advice: plan an outfit for each evening, and a spare. Between two performances and a dinner, a well-thought-out suitcase is worth more than a dash into town.

Key takeaways

No written rules, but festive, elegant evening attire, as the festival wishes: a dark suit or dinner jacket, an evening or cocktail dress; traditional dress has always been welcome; premieres are dressier. TGZ Conciergerie, an independent house with no affiliation with the Salzburger Festspiele and no official status, prepares your attire along with the rest of the stay, on quotation.
