amfAR Gala in Venice Dress Code: What to Wear?

One black-tie evening, a week on the lagoon: what the gala asks for, and how to dress for boats, bridges and late-summer evenings.

Last updated 5 October 2026 · 3 min read

In short

The amfAR Gala in Venice is a black-tie dinner: a dinner jacket for men, a long gown for women. In Venice, the outfit must also cope with the water: you step on and off a boat, cross jetties and sometimes a bridge. Stable shoes, a gown that does not trail, a stole for the journey back across the lagoon. For the rest of the week, late-summer elegance: linen and light colours by day, smart dress for dinners. A stylist prepares each evening in advance.

01

The gala dress code: black tie

The foundation presents the evening as a black-tie gala: evening dress is the rule. For men, a dinner jacket — black or midnight blue — with a bow tie; for women, a long gown or equivalent evening wear. Each edition's invitation specifies the customs of the year.

The outfit remains a matter of taste: you do not dress for a red carpet, you dress for a dinner, in a historic venue of the city.

Dressing for the water

This is what makes Venice particular: the journey is part of the evening. You board from a jetty and step off in front of the venue; the pilot offers a hand, but the outfit has to allow it. Very fine heels catch between the boards and slip on damp stone; a train gets wet quickly.

A stylist helps reconcile elegance and terrain: a broader heel, a gown adjusted to the right length, a clutch that fits in one hand. Without giving anything up.

03

Late summer on the lagoon: think of the journey back

In late August and early September, the days are often hot in Venice, and the evenings mild. But the journey back is late, on the water, and the lagoon air cools after midnight: a stole, a light jacket or an evening coat should be planned for the boat.

Humidity must also be considered for the hair: the stylist and the hairdresser know it, and time the preparation to the hour of departure.

Dressing for the rest of the week

Gala week is also Venice Film Festival week, and Venice dresses for it. For dinners in palazzi and at the grand tables, smart dress; for a private dinner, the dress code is decided with you and announced to the guests. By day, light elegance: linen, cotton, light colours, and flat shoes for the alleys and bridges.

In churches and some basilicas, covered shoulders and knees are the rule: a shawl in your bag is enough. If you also attend a gala screening on the Lido, its rules are specific to the festival.

The stylist and the fittings

A dedicated stylist prepares your outfits before you arrive: a selection of pieces for your evenings, fittings in the suite, quick alterations, and for gala night, hair and make-up timed to the boat's departure. Private boutique appointments are requested in advance and depend on each house.

We never present styling as a way into the evening: it serves your own evenings. If you are invited to a house's table, the outfit sometimes rests with that house; we then arrange what surrounds it — the preparation time, the boat, the journey back. Our amfAR Gala Venice VIP page details what we compose, and our guide How the amfAR Gala in Venice Works explains why the table is taken through the foundation.
