The Met Gala Dress Code: How Does the Theme Shape the Looks?

Each year, the exhibition gives the gala its dress code. What it means, and how to dress for the New York week around the evening.

Last updated 5 October 2026 · 4 min read

In short

The Met Gala dress code follows each year from the theme of the Costume Institute's spring exhibition: “Tailored for You” in 2025, for an exhibition devoted to tailoring; “Fashion Is Art” in 2026, for “Costume Art”. It is announced by the museum with the theme, and applies only to the evening's guests. For 2027, neither theme nor dress code has been published. For the week around it — dinners, private evenings, the exhibition visit — New York in May calls for evening elegance without costume: evening dress for a private evening, a polished look for the great tables. A stylist prepares each evening in advance.

The gala dress code: a theme, an exhibition

The Met Gala is the opening evening of an exhibition, and the exhibition sets the tone. Each year, the museum announces a theme, then a dress code that interprets it for the guests: precise enough to guide, open enough to leave room for each person's reading. The houses that dress the guests work from it months in advance.

The last two editions give the measure of it. In 2025, the exhibition devoted to tailoring called for “Tailored for You”; in 2026, “Costume Art”, which set garments alongside works from the museum's collections, called for “Fashion Is Art”. The table below summarises these reference points.

2027: a theme still to come

For 2027, the museum withdrew in late August 2026 the exhibition it had announced, and indicated that the new theme would be announced at a later date. The dress code will follow. We do not anticipate it: this guide will be updated as soon as it is announced.

For those preparing the week, this changes little: the dress code applies only to the gala's guests. The looks for your own evenings can be prepared now, with a stylist, and may echo the theme once it is known — if you wish.

Dressing for the week around the evening

During gala week, New York dresses up. For a private evening created for you, the dress code is decided with you and announced to the guests: evening dress, black tie, or a nod to the year's theme. For Manhattan's great tables, a polished look is enough; for Bemelmans Bar or Café Carlyle, named by way of illustration, evening elegance is in keeping with the house.

In early May, evenings are mild but can turn cool: a jacket or a light wrap is worth bringing for the journeys. For the exhibition visit, comfortable daywear — there is a great deal of walking.

The stylist and the fittings

A dedicated stylist prepares your looks before you arrive: a selection of pieces for each of your evenings, fittings in your suite, express alterations, and for the main evening, hair and make-up timed to the hour of departure. Private boutique appointments, on Madison Avenue or Fifth Avenue, are requested in advance and depend on each house.

We never present styling as a route into the evening: it serves your own evenings. If you are invited to the gala through other channels, the look is generally the province of the house hosting you; we then arrange what surrounds it — the suite for fittings, the preparation time, the car.

The evenings around the gala

On gala night, the city does not stop at the museum steps. Private dinners and evenings hosted by others belong to their hosts, by invitation — we do not sell them. What we do: create yours. A dinner in a private room, an evening in an Upper East Side townhouse, a NoHo piano bar such as The Nines, named by way of illustration, reserved for a last drink.

Our Met Gala VIP page details what we compose, and our guide Where to Stay for the Met Gala helps you choose the address to set out from — and to return to.
