Where to Stay for the Met Gala?
Upper East Side, Fifth Avenue, Central Park South: the addresses that matter around the museum, compared for a May week in New York.
Last updated 5 October 2026 · 4 min read
For a week arranged around the Met Gala, the best addresses are in the Upper East Side and on Fifth Avenue, as close as possible to the museum at 1000 Fifth Avenue. The Carlyle, at 35 East 76th Street, is a few blocks away; Aman New York, in the Crown Building at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, and The Plaza, facing Central Park, are about ten minutes away by car — except on gala night, when the streets around the museum are closed to traffic. A private apartment with staff suits those who wish to receive. In early May, suites are booked early; every stay is quoted individually.
Why stay near the museum
The Metropolitan Museum of Art occupies Fifth Avenue at the edge of Central Park, in the heart of the Upper East Side. Staying nearby means living the week on foot: the park in the morning, the galleries of Madison Avenue, the Costume Institute exhibition as soon as it opens, a dinner in the neighbourhood without a car.
There is a practical reason too. On gala night, Fifth Avenue is closed to traffic around the museum — roughly from 79th to 86th Street in 2026, at the discretion of the New York City Police Department — and the neighbouring streets are congested. A well-chosen address, and a route that accounts for it, make the difference between a calm evening and an hour in traffic.

The Carlyle: the Upper East Side, a few blocks away
The Carlyle has welcomed its guests since 1930 at 35 East 76th Street, a block from Central Park and Madison Avenue. Managed by Rosewood, the hotel keeps the scale of a private house — just under two hundred rooms, a large share of them suites — and three addresses shape its evenings: Bemelmans Bar, its walls painted by Ludwig Bemelmans, Café Carlyle, a cabaret, and Dowling's, the dining room. The Michelin Guide awards it two Keys.
It is the address closest to the museum among those we name, and the calmest for those who wish to live the week in the neighbourhood. Tables at Bemelmans and Café Carlyle are in high demand on certain evenings: we seek them early, under the house's rules, without promising what depends on it.
Aman New York: Fifth Avenue, in the Crown Building
Aman New York opened in 2022 in the Crown Building, a 1921 tower at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street. All its rooms are suites — eighty-three, each with a fireplace — and the spa spans three floors around an indoor pool of some twenty metres. The Michelin Guide awards it three Keys.
South of the museum, the address puts Midtown, the boutiques of Fifth Avenue and Central Park within walking distance. Its restaurants are reserved for residents and members of the Aman Club: staying there remains the simplest way to dine there.

The Plaza: Central Park South
Opened in 1907 at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, The Plaza has faced the park for more than a century. A designated historic landmark, it is managed by Fairmont. The Palm Court, beneath its glass roof, serves afternoon tea; the most sought-after suites overlook Central Park.
It is the address for those who want the park as their horizon and a house of long tradition, a few minutes by car from the museum on an ordinary day. When a specific suite is unavailable, we say so and propose the closest equivalent.
Private apartment or townhouse: receiving guests
For a group, a family or a stay where you receive, a private apartment or an Upper East Side townhouse, with staff, offers what a hotel cannot: a drawing room for an after-party dinner, a room for fittings, the discretion of an address that is not public. A minimum number of nights is often required; we check every property before proposing it.
| Address | Neighbourhood | For whom | Good to know |

| Apartment or townhouse | Upper East Side | Groups, families, receptions | Minimum number of nights often required |

When to book, and how we proceed
In early May, New York is in high demand, and gala week even more so around the museum. We advise securing the hotel as soon as your dates take shape, adjusting once the museum publishes the 2027 date. We book with hotels as any client does: TGZ is affiliated with none of them.
The quote depends on the address, the suite category, the length of stay and the timing of the booking. It includes no access to the gala. For the rest of the week — tables, private evening, stylist, the exhibition visit — our Met Gala VIP page composes the whole, and our guide Visiting the Costume Institute Exhibition prepares the visit.
Frequently asked questions
Among the addresses we name, The Carlyle, at 35 East 76th Street, is the closest: a few blocks separate the hotel from the museum at 1000 Fifth Avenue. Aman New York and The Plaza are further south, around Central Park South, about ten minutes by car on an ordinary day.
Not necessarily. The Upper East Side suits a week centred on the museum and Madison Avenue; Central Park South and Fifth Avenue, further south, put Midtown and its tables within walking distance. We choose according to your plans, not a neighbourhood's reputation.
Not by car: Fifth Avenue is closed to traffic around the museum — roughly from 79th to 86th Street in 2026, at the discretion of the New York City Police Department. The neighbouring streets are congested. We plan the timing and routes of your journeys accordingly.
As soon as your dates take shape. The 2027 date has not yet been published, but the evening takes place on the first Monday in May: we can secure the hotel early and adjust afterwards, under each house's terms.
Yes: an Upper East Side apartment or townhouse, with staff, lends itself well to a group or a stay where you receive. A minimum number of nights is often required; we check each property and its terms before proposing it to you, on a tailored quote.
No. No hotel or address gives access to the evening, which is by invitation. Staying near the museum makes the week simpler — and the visit to the exhibition, once it opens to the public, more pleasant.
