What is the amfAR Gala in Venice?

amfAR is an American foundation devoted to research on HIV and AIDS. Every year, during the Venice Film Festival, its Venetian gala brings together guests from cinema, fashion, the arts and philanthropy, for the benefit of its research programmes.

In 2021, the foundation returned to Venice for a dinner by the water, at the Arsenale; after dinner, gondolas carried the guests to a floating stage on the lagoon. The evening has become an annual occasion: the sixth edition was held on 6 September 2026 at the Molino Stucky, on the Giudecca. The running order is now established: a cocktail reception, a black-tie seated dinner, musical performances, and an auction of contemporary works of art and unique experiences, whose proceeds fund research.

When and where: the calendar

The gala follows the Venice Film Festival, held on the Lido from late August to mid-September. Since 2023, it has taken place on the first Sunday of the festival. The venue, however, changes: the foundation announces it for each edition. As of 5 October 2026, neither the date nor the venue for 2027 has been published, and the Venice Film Festival has not yet announced its dates: the gala is expected in September 2027.

For a stay, this calendar has two consequences: gala week is also the week when Venice and the Lido are in high demand, and the venue of the evening is only known during the year. The table below sets out the verified reference points.

Who sells the tables, and how

Unlike evenings held strictly by invitation, the amfAR Gala sells its tables and places — but it is the foundation itself that sells them, for the benefit of research, through its own channels. It sets the terms and remains in charge of its room. Houses and companies also take a table and invite their own guests.

Living gala week in Venice

The evening lasts one night; the week belongs to the city. In late August and early September, Venice lives to the rhythm of the Venice Film Festival: screenings on the Lido, dinners on the canals, receptions in the palazzi. The days are often hot, the evenings mild by the water.

The address first: since the gala venue changes almost every year, you choose a central address rather than proximity — the Grand Canal or St Mark's to reach everything quickly, the Giudecca for calm, the Lido for the Venice Film Festival. Then the journeys: Marco Polo airport has a business aviation terminal and a private jetty where the water taxi waits; the city centre is about thirty minutes away by water. What makes it vary: the address and category of the suite, the length of stay, the flight, the days of private boat and stylist, the dinners, the size of the group and the timing of the booking. None of these items includes a gala table.
