Met Gala: How Does the Metropolitan Museum's Evening Work?

A benefit evening, a spring exhibition, a New York week: the complete guide, with what can be booked and what cannot.

Last updated 5 October 2026 · 6 min read

In short

The Met Gala is the annual benefit evening of the Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It takes place on the first Monday in May, opens the spring fashion exhibition and is the department's main source of annual funding. The evening is strictly by invitation: the list is set by the museum and the editors of Vogue, and no place is sold to the public. For 2027, the museum has not yet published the date or the theme: the evening will take place in May 2027. A private visitor lives the week around it: a hotel near the museum, tables, private evenings, and a visit to the exhibition, open to the public a few days after the gala.

01

What is the Met Gala?

Its exact name is the Costume Institute Benefit: an evening held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art for the benefit of its department devoted to dress, the Costume Institute. The museum describes it as the department's main source of annual funding — exhibitions, publications, acquisitions and operations. Each year it gathers several hundred guests, around four hundred and fifty to six hundred depending on the edition, for a cocktail reception, a first viewing of the exhibition and a dinner.

The story begins before the museum itself. The Museum of Costume Art, founded in 1937, joined The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1946 and became the Costume Institute. Two years later, in 1948, the publicist Eleanor Lambert conceived a first benefit evening in its support: a midnight supper. The evening changed form and address over the decades before settling at the museum, on Fifth Avenue.

What sets it apart is the link between the evening and the exhibition: each year, a theme, an exhibition and a dress code answer one another. The evening is recounted in images around the world the next day; the exhibition stays open for months. Our Met Gala VIP page explains how we compose the week around it.

An evening, then an exhibition: the calendar

The rhythm is now established: the gala is held on the first Monday in May, and the exhibition it opens welcomes the public a few days later, for several months. In 2025 as in 2026, the public opening took place on 10 May. For 2027, the museum withdrew in late August 2026 the exhibition it had announced, and stated that the new theme and the evening would be announced at a later date.

For a stay, this calendar is an advantage: remaining a few days after the gala lets you see the exhibition in its first days, while the city is still talking about it. The table below sets out the verified reference points.

2025Monday 5 May 2025 — dress code “Tailored for You”10 May 2025, until 26 October 2025

Who is invited, and why no place is sold

The Met Gala has no public box office. The guest list is set by the museum and the editors of Vogue, who organise the evening with it. A large share of the tables is taken by fashion houses and companies, which invite their own guests; those lists are themselves subject to approval. The sums paid fund the Costume Institute: this is a contribution to a benefit evening, not a ticket.

It should be said plainly: no one can honestly sell a place at the Met Gala, and no serious concierge promises one. Any offer of a “ticket” or a “gala package” should raise suspicion. Our guide How the Met Gala Invitation Works details how the evening really works, drawing on public sources.

How to live Met Gala week as a private visitor

The evening belongs to its guests; the week belongs to the city. In early May, New York is at its best: Central Park turns green again, terraces open, the great tables are full. In the days around the gala, dinners, private evenings and appointments multiply across Manhattan, and the Upper East Side, around the museum, becomes the centre of attention.

A well-made stay rests on what is composed: a suite a few blocks from the museum, a stylist for each evening's look, tables held at the right hours — Le Bernardin, The Polo Bar, Torrisi, or Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle for a last drink, named by way of illustration — a private evening created for you on gala night, then a visit to the exhibition as soon as it opens. Our guide Visiting the Costume Institute Exhibition prepares the visit, and our guide The Met Gala Dress Code the looks.

05

Planning your stay: hotel, journeys, budget

The hotel first: the Upper East Side and Fifth Avenue offer the addresses closest to the museum — The Carlyle, Aman New York, The Plaza, named by way of illustration — and suites are booked early for early May. Our guide Where to Stay for the Met Gala compares each option, with the question that matters: how far from the museum do you wish to sleep on the night its surroundings are closed?

Then the journeys: on gala night, Fifth Avenue is closed to traffic around the museum — roughly from 79th to 86th Street in 2026, at the discretion of the New York City Police Department. A dedicated chauffeur and a route that skirts the neighbourhood settle most of it. From Paris, a private flight to Teterboro, about 19 km (12 miles) from Midtown, is timed around the six-hour time difference.

Finally, the budget: every week is quoted individually, because it is composed. What makes it vary: the address and category of the suite, the length of stay, the flight, the number of chauffeur and stylist days, the format of the dinners and the private evening, the size of the group and the timing of the booking. None of these items includes access to the gala.

Key points

The Met Gala is the benefit evening of the Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, on the first Monday in May; it opens the spring exhibition and funds most of the department's year. The evening is by invitation, with no place sold to the public; the 2027 date and theme have not yet been published. The exhibition, for its part, opens to the public a few days later. TGZ Conciergerie, an independent house not affiliated with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, its Costume Institute, Vogue or Condé Nast, with no official status, provides no access to the gala: it composes the week around it — hotel, tables, private evenings, styling, the exhibition visit. Every stay is quoted individually, with availability and terms confirmed before any commitment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The gala is held every year on the first Monday in May. As of 5 October 2026, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has not published the 2027 date: it announced in late August 2026 that the theme and the evening would be announced at a later date. The evening will take place in May 2027; for reference, it was held on Monday 4 May in 2026 and Monday 5 May in 2025.

It has not been announced. The exhibition the museum presented in July 2026 for spring 2027 was withdrawn from its programme on 31 August 2026, and the museum indicated that a new theme would be announced later. We will update this guide as soon as it is.

No. The evening is by invitation: the list is set by the museum and the editors of Vogue, and the houses that take a table invite their guests, subject to approval. No place is sold to the public, and any offer to the contrary should raise suspicion.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, for the benefit of its Costume Institute, together with the editors of Vogue, who set the guest list with the museum. The evening is held at the museum, The Met Fifth Avenue, on Fifth Avenue, at the edge of Central Park.

The essence of what it celebrates: the Costume Institute's spring exhibition, open to the public a few days after the evening, with a museum admission ticket — on 10 May in 2025 as in 2026. Add to that the city itself, in early May, with its tables and its evenings.

Four to six nights let you live the week without rushing it: arrive before the gala, dine elsewhere in the city that same evening, then stay until the exhibition opens to the public a few days later. We adjust to your plans and to the 2027 date, as soon as it is published.

No. TGZ Conciergerie is an independent house, not affiliated with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, its Costume Institute, Vogue or Condé Nast, or any fashion house, and with no official status. We sell no place and promise no invitation: we compose the week around the evening.
