Where to Stay for Henley Royal Regatta?

The riverside town, the Oxfordshire and Thames Valley countryside, or London about an hour away: three approaches to an address for a summer week.

Last updated 5 October 2026 · 4 min read

In short

For Henley Royal Regatta, three approaches to accommodation stand out. Closest of all, Henley-on-Thames itself: a few hotels, such as The Relais Henley, on the banks of the Thames — cited for illustration —, and houses rented for the week, from which you walk to the enclosures across the bridge. A little further, the countryside of Oxfordshire, the Chilterns and the Thames Valley: rented country houses, or hotels such as Danesfield House, between Henley and Marlow, or Cliveden House, at Taplow — cited for illustration. Finally London, about an hour away, for those combining the regatta and the city. The small town has few rooms: they go very early for regatta week. Each option is prepared on quotation.

01

The overall answer: a small town, a week in high demand

Henley-on-Thames is a small Oxfordshire market town on the Thames. The enclosures lie just opposite, on the Berkshire bank, a few minutes' walk from the bridge. During the regatta, the town welcomes crowds far beyond its hotel capacity.

The right criterion is therefore not only distance, but rhythm: being on the riverbank for the first races of the morning, returning to change before dinner, hosting at home. Three approaches to an address answer three ways of living the week.

02

In Henley: town hotels and rented houses

Staying in town means living the regatta on foot: you cross the bridge in the morning, come back to rest between two sessions, dine by the water. The Relais Henley, an old house on Hart Street on the banks of the Thames, with around forty rooms, illustrates these town-centre addresses — cited for illustration.

Many houses in and around the town are let for the duration of the regatta, sometimes with a garden on the river. It is a good answer for a family or a group of friends, provided you book very early: the best addresses often go from one year to the next, with a minimum number of nights.

03

The countryside: Oxfordshire, the Chilterns, the Thames Valley

Around Henley, the wooded hills of the Chilterns and the villages of the Thames Valley offer country houses to rent for the week, with household staff, a chef and a garden. You host there after the racing, and live the week without depending on a restaurant reservation.

As for hotels, Danesfield House, at Medmenham, between Henley and Marlow, and Cliveden House, further downstream at Taplow, illustrate these great houses turned hotels, with their grounds above the river — cited for illustration. They are reached by car with a chauffeur; on regatta days, allow some margin.

04

London: the city and the regatta

For those also coming for London — a dinner, an exhibition, meetings —, staying in the city remains a serious option. The train links Paddington to Henley, with an enhanced service during the regatta, and the station is in the town centre, within walking distance of the enclosures; by car with a chauffeur, allow about an hour outside busy periods.

The grand hotels of Mayfair, Belgravia or Knightsbridge let you leave after breakfast and return to dine in town. One or two days of regatta thus fit into a London stay.

05

Criteria, minimum stays and timing: how to decide

Three criteria settle it. The number of regatta days, first: for one day, London is enough; for three or six, Henley or the countryside avoid the round trips. Use, next: living in a hotel with continuous service, or hosting at home. The programme, finally: the regatta alone, or an English week between the river, the countryside and the city.

Timing is the rule without exception: rooms in Henley and rented houses go from winter, often well before, for regatta week, with a minimum number of nights. The table below summarises the choice.
