Henley Royal Regatta: The Complete Guide

Six days of rowing on the Thames, two crews per race, two enclosures and a written dress code: how to approach a week that rewards early preparation.

In short

Henley Royal Regatta is the rowing regatta held every summer since 1839 on the Thames, at Henley-on-Thames, about an hour from London. The 2027 edition runs from Tuesday 29 June to Sunday 4 July: six days of knockout racing, in which two crews race side by side over 1 mile 550 yards, from Temple Island to Poplar Point, against the stream. Two enclosures line the finish, on the Berkshire bank: the Stewards' Enclosure, reserved for its members and their guests, and the Regatta Enclosure, open to all. The regatta sells its own tickets and hospitality packages. Everything else — accommodation, travel, attire — is composed around it, and booked early.

01

What is Henley Royal Regatta?

It all begins with a public meeting, on 26 March 1839: the town of Henley decides to hold an annual regatta, and the first takes place that same year, over a single afternoon. It extends to two days as early as 1840. In 1851, Prince Albert becomes its first royal patron; since then, the reigning monarch has always accepted this patronage, which gives the regatta its name of Henley Royal Regatta.

Since 1885, the regatta has been run by a self-electing body of Stewards, largely former oarsmen. It has lengthened over time — three days in 1886, four in 1906, five in 1986 — and is now rowed over six days, from Tuesday to Sunday. It brings two worlds together: the sport, with crews from many countries, and a social tradition, with its enclosures, its blazers and its dress regulations.

02

The course and the racing format

The course measures 1 mile 550 yards, about 2,112 metres: the full stretch of open water that could be had on this reach of the Thames in 1839. It has been straight since 1924. The start is downstream of Temple Island, the finish is judged at Poplar Point, opposite the enclosures; the boats row against the stream, along a marked course.

Henley has one particularity: each race pits only two crews against each other, side by side, and the loser is eliminated. The events thus progress round by round, up to the weekend finals. A race lasts a few minutes; they follow one another all day, which leaves time for lunch, a stroll along the bank and a return for the next finish.

The two enclosures, and hospitality

The Regatta Enclosure is open to all: an open grandstand with no booking required, riverside places, a covered restaurant, a bar and large screens, with no dress code. Under-14s enter free with an adult. The regatta sells day tickets for it, released in the spring.

The Stewards' Enclosure, opposite the finish, is reserved for its members and their guests. Membership requires being proposed and seconded by two members, followed by a waiting list of several years: we can neither obtain it nor work around it, nor obtain a guest badge. The regatta also sells hospitality packages — a riverside restaurant, private chalets, Temple Island —, some of which offer optional access to the Stewards' Enclosure. Our guide How to Attend Henley Royal Regatta? sets out each route.

05

Preparing your stay: attire, accommodation, arrival, budget

Attire first: the Stewards' Enclosure applies a written dress code, checked at the entrance; the Regatta Enclosure imposes none. Our guide What Is the Dress Code at Henley Royal Regatta? covers it point by point.

Accommodation next: a hotel or a rented house in Henley, a country house in Oxfordshire or the Thames Valley, a suite in London. Arrival last: the train from Paddington, a chauffeur, a helicopter to an authorised landing site nearby, a boat when a mooring is available. Our guides Where to Stay for Henley Royal Regatta? and How to Get to Henley Royal Regatta? compare each option.

The budget is composed item by item — enclosure or hospitality, number of days, guests, accommodation, travel, attire — and is set on quotation. We explain what makes it vary rather than publish a rate card.
