Where to Stay During TEFAF Maastricht?

The old town, the far bank of the Maas or the Limburg countryside: in Maastricht, the choice of address decides your evenings.

In short

For TEFAF Maastricht, the right choice depends on your evenings. The old town, around the Vrijthof and the Jekerkwartier, puts evening tables a few steps away and the MECC some ten minutes by car; the Kruisherenhotel, a fifteenth-century former monastery with its Gothic church, is a singular address there, cited for illustration. Wyck, on the other bank of the Maas, is close to the central station. The nearby countryside, around Valkenburg, offers quiet estates, such as Château St. Gerlach, some twenty minutes from the fair. During the fair, the sought-after rooms go early, often with a minimum stay. Every stay is quoted individually.

01

The golden rule: a small city, few rooms

Maastricht is a city on a human scale, and TEFAF draws visitors there from all over the world every year. During the fair, the addresses that matter are therefore in high demand: the sought-after establishments are often booked from one year to the next, cancellation terms tighten, and minimum stays are common.

So you have to decide early what matters most: the old town, to do everything on foot in the evening, or the quiet of a country estate, with a chauffeur for every journey. Either way, the fair is a few minutes' drive away.

The options, compared

The table below summarises the options. Hotels are cited for illustration, with no partnership; their availability during the fair is checked case by case.

The old town: everything on foot

The heart of Maastricht is arranged around the Vrijthof, the great square lined by the Basilica of Saint Servatius, and the Jekerkwartier, the quarter of lanes along the Jeker. Staying in the centre lets you walk to dinner, stroll between two fair days and reach the MECC in some ten minutes by car, or by the free shuttle that TEFAF runs during the fair.

The Kruisherenhotel, set in a fifteenth-century former monastery and its Gothic church, a hotel since 2005, is a singular address there, cited for illustration. The drawback: the old town is the most sought after, and its rooms go first.

04

Wyck and Céramique: the other bank

Across the Maas, Wyck stretches around the central station, with its shopping streets and old houses; to the south, the Céramique quarter, built on a former industrial site, is home to the Bonnefanten, the museum designed by Aldo Rossi on the riverbank.

These quarters are practical for those arriving by train, quieter in the evening than the centre, and a few minutes from the fair. The old town remains within walking distance, across the bridges.

05

The nearby countryside: the quiet of an estate

East of Maastricht, southern Limburg takes on a rolling character, rare in the Netherlands, with its châteaux, stone farmhouses and villages. Château St. Gerlach, in Houthem, near Valkenburg, an estate whose origins go back to the thirteenth century and a hotel since 1997, is a reference address there, cited for illustration.

Staying in the countryside means a chauffeur for every journey, some twenty minutes from the fair as from the centre; in return, you find quiet and space every evening. A house rented for the length of the stay, in town or in the countryside, with staff, also makes it possible to entertain.

When to book, and how

For mid-March, the preceding autumn is the right window; the most sought-after addresses often go even earlier, from one edition to the next. Cancellation terms are stricter during the fair: we present them to you before any commitment.

Our method: start from your programme — fair days, the city, evenings — to choose between town and countryside, then the address, then the category. Our guide How to Get to TEFAF Maastricht? completes this choice, and our guide What to Do in Maastricht During TEFAF? helps you sketch the stay.
