How to Attend the Vienna Opera Ball?
Who sells the tickets, how the ballot works, who the boxes go to, how the debutants are chosen: how it really works, drawn from the organiser's own sources.

Entry tickets, table places, boxes and spectator tickets for the Vienna Opera Ball are sold exclusively by the Opera Ball Office of the Vienna State Opera, directly to guests. Entry tickets are allocated by ballot among those registered (up to four per person); table places, in the order requests arrive (up to six); boxes, by direct sale, with a right of first refusal for donors of the Opera's circle of friends. Orders from tour operators and resellers are not accepted, and their tickets may be blocked. TGZ sells none: we explain the calendar, and arrange the stay around the ball.
The short answer: everything goes through the Opera Ball Office
The Vienna Opera Ball is organised by the Vienna State Opera, and its Opera Ball Office sells every place, directly to guests. The organiser states it unambiguously: there is no other point of sale. It also states that it does not accept orders from tour operators or commercial resellers, and that any tickets allocated to them may be blocked.
This guide describes how the ball works as the organiser publishes it. One point from the outset: TGZ Conciergerie is an independent house, not affiliated with the Vienna State Opera or its Opera Ball Office, with no official status. We sell, buy and resell no ticket, and know of no way around the rules.

The four types of place
The entry ticket gives access to every space of the ball, with no reserved seat; the opening can be followed on screens. The table place includes the entry ticket and a seat reserved all night in the chosen salon, convenient as a meeting point for a group. The box, for around six to twelve people depending on the type, sets you apart from the movement of the ball, with a view of the floor and catering service. The spectator ticket, in addition to an entry ticket or a table, gives a seated or standing place from which to watch the opening from the auditorium.
Every ticket includes a solidarity contribution, passed on to an Austrian initiative helping people in difficulty. Prices are set and published by the organiser; we do not repeat them here. The table below summarises the allocation rules.
| Type of place | Allocation | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Entry ticket | Ballot among those registered, in the spring | Up to four per person; being drawn gives the right to buy |
| Table place | Order in which requests arrive, from late June | Up to six per person; entry ticket included |
| Box | Direct sale by the Opera Ball Office | Right of first refusal for donors of the Opera's circle of friends |
| Spectator ticket | In addition to a ticket or a table | Very few in number, first to members of the circle of friends |
| An intermediary's "package" | None | Reseller orders set aside, tickets may be blocked: to be avoided |
The calendar: everything happens in the spring
For the 2027 edition, the organiser opened registration for the entry-ticket ballot from 1 to 5 June 2026, then table-place bookings from 24 June 2026. These windows have passed. The moment of registration makes no difference to your chances in the ballot; tables, on the other hand, go in the order requests arrive.
For the 2028 edition, it is reasonable to expect a comparable calendar, in spring 2027 — to be confirmed by the organiser. For boxes, contact is made directly with the Opera Ball Office, bearing in mind that donors of the Opera's circle of friends have priority. We let you know the dates as soon as they are published.

Opening the ball: the debutants' committee
The opening is danced by around one hundred and sixty couples. Entry is by application, as a couple only: be between 18 and 27 years old on the day of the ball, dance the left-turning waltz very well, and not have opened the ball before. For 2027, applications were received from 1 June to 23 September 2026; couples living near Vienna attend an audition on 10 October 2026, others may send a video. Answers come at the end of December.
Then come the rehearsals, which are compulsory: several days in January, two main rehearsals at the Opera, then the dress rehearsal, the day before the ball. The Opera reserves the right to stand down a couple that does not reach the required level. None of this can be bought or negotiated.
What we do, and what we do not
We sell no ticket, table or box, file no request in your name and promise no access. We tell you honestly how the Opera allocates its places, and on which dates. If you have your tickets, we arrange everything around the night: the room facing the Opera, the tailcoat and the gown, the waltz lesson, the car, the dinner the following day.
If you do not, Vienna in February is very much worth living without the Opera Ball: the season counts more than 450 balls, evenings of opera and concerts, and the city's fine tables and cafés. Our Vienna Opera Ball VIP page presents the whole.

You register during a short window in the spring — from 1 to 5 June 2026 for the 2027 edition. Being drawn gives you the right to buy your tickets, up to four per person. The moment of registration makes no difference to your chances.
Boxes are sold directly by the Opera Ball Office, in limited number, with a right of first refusal for donors of the Opera's circle of friends. We neither sell nor book any box.
Not reliably, and one should be wary of anyone who promises it: the Opera sets aside orders from tour operators and resellers, and may block their tickets. TGZ sells no ticket; we arrange the stay around the ball.
Yes, the organiser allows it: couples living far from Vienna may send a video of their left-turning waltz instead of attending the audition. The age and level requirements remain the same, and the January rehearsals are compulsory.
Everything around the night: the room facing the Opera, the fitted tailcoat and the altered gown, hair and make-up, a waltz lesson, the car at entry time and for the return, the dinners the evening before and the day after, the flight.
