In short

The Wiener Opernball is the annual ball of the Vienna State Opera, which organises it under the high patronage of the Austrian Federal President. It takes place on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday: the 69th edition will be held on Thursday 4 February 2027. Doors open at 8.15 pm, the opening begins at 10 pm with the debutants' committee, then comes "Alles Walzer" at around 10.45 pm; three quadrilles mark the night, which ends at 5 am. Some 5,500 guests attend. Tickets, tables and boxes are sold exclusively by the Opera Ball Office. The dress code requires the tailcoat and the floor-length ball gown. Around it, Vienna is lived over a few days: a palace on the Ring, tables, waltz lessons.

01

What is the Vienna Opera Ball?

The Wiener Opernball is the high point of the Viennese ball season, which counts more than 450 balls each winter. For a single night, the Vienna State Opera, on the Ring, becomes a ballroom: the stalls seats disappear, the stage and the auditorium are joined into a single floor, and the boxes look down on the dancing. According to the organiser, this transformation takes fifty-one hours of work.

The ball is organised by the Vienna State Opera itself, under the high patronage of the Austrian Federal President, whose arrival, at around 9 pm, is one of the moments of the evening. Every ticket includes a solidarity contribution paid to an initiative helping people in difficulty in Austria. Our Vienna Opera Ball VIP page explains how we compose the stay around it.

A history that begins in 1877

When the Court Opera moved into its new building on the Ring in 1869, the emperor at first refused to see dancing there. The first dance evening took place on 11 December 1877; the house's first formal Redoute followed on 2 March 1878. Abolished in 1899, the tradition was revived under the Republic, and the name "Wiener Opernball" appeared for the first time in 1935.

The ball was interrupted during the Second World War. The Opera, bombed in 1945, reopened in 1955; the ball resumed in 1956. Since then it has been cancelled only in 1991, because of the Gulf War, and in 2021 and 2022, during the pandemic. The table below sets out the verified milestones.

How the night unfolds

The organiser publishes a precise running order. Doors open at 8.15 pm; guests enter by the red carpet or by the other entrances. At around 9 pm, the Federal President arrives. At 10 pm the opening begins: the entrance of the debutants' committee, singing and ballet, then the opening waltz. At around 10.45 pm comes "Alles Walzer": the floor belongs to everyone.

Three quadrilles then mark the night — at midnight, at 2 am and at 4 am; the midnight one is the busiest. The ball ends at 5 am. In between, the foyers, salons and upper floors of the Opera become so many bars, lounges and dance floors, each with its own music.

Tickets, tables, boxes: who allocates them

Everything goes through the Opera Ball Office, and through it alone: according to the organiser, there is no other point of sale. Entry tickets are allocated by ballot among those registered, in the spring; table places are booked in the order requests arrive; boxes are sold directly by the Opera Ball Office, with a right of first refusal for donors of the Opera's circle of friends; spectator tickets, very few in number, go first to members.

The Opera states that it does not accept orders from tour operators or commercial resellers, and that any tickets allocated to them may be blocked. Any offer of a "ball package" should therefore arouse suspicion. Our guide How to Attend the Vienna Opera Ball details each route.

05

The opening committee: the debutants

The opening is danced by a committee of around one hundred and sixty couples, the debutants, in white ball gowns and tailcoats. They are chosen by the Opera on application as a couple, followed by an audition: they must be between 18 and 27 years old on the day of the ball, dance the left-turning waltz very well, and not have opened the ball before — it is done only once. Applications for 2027 were received from 1 June to 23 September 2026; auditions follow in October, answers at the end of December, rehearsals in January.

We say it plainly: we can neither support nor promise an application. If your daughter, your son or someone close to you is selected, we will gladly arrange everything around those weeks — rehearsal stays, a hotel for the family, hair and make-up on the day itself.

06

Preparing your stay: hotel, attire, budget

The hotel first: the Hotel Sacher and the Hotel Bristol face the Opera, the Hotel Imperial is a few steps away on the Ring — named by way of illustration. In the week of the ball, rooms on the Opera side are booked early. Then the attire: the tailcoat is required, not the dinner jacket; the gown reaches the floor. A tailcoat must be fitted, a gown altered: both need to be started well ahead. February, finally: it is cold in Vienna, sometimes snowy; a long coat and a car are to be planned, even for a two-minute journey.

The budget is set by quote, because it is composed. What makes it vary: the address and category of the room, the length of stay, the flight, the tailcoat and the gown (purchase, hire, alterations), the waltz lessons, the days of chauffeur, the format of the dinners, the size of the group and the timing of the booking. None of these items includes a ball ticket.

What to remember

The Vienna Opera Ball takes place on Thursday 4 February 2027 at the Vienna State Opera, which organises it and sells its tickets, tables and boxes itself, to the exclusion of any intermediary. The dress code requires the tailcoat and the floor-length ball gown; the opening is danced by a committee of debutants chosen by audition. TGZ Conciergerie, an independent house not affiliated with the Vienna State Opera or its Opera Ball Office, with no official status, sells no ticket: it composes the stay around the ball — palace, attire, waltz lessons, tables, chauffeur. Every stay is quoted individually, availability and terms confirmed before any commitment.
