Where to Stay in Los Angeles During Oscars Week?

During Oscars week, three neighbourhoods are home to the grand hotels: Beverly Hills — The Beverly Hills Hotel, the Beverly Wilshire, The Peninsula Beverly Hills, the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, named by way of illustration —, for its central position between the parties; Bel Air, with the Hotel Bel-Air, for the calm of a canyon; West Hollywood, with the Sunset Tower Hotel, The West Hollywood EDITION or the Chateau Marmont, for Sunset Boulevard and the evenings. The overall answer: stay near the parties, not the auditorium
The instinct would be to sleep near the Dolby Theatre. It is rarely the right choice: Hollywood is a heavily constrained area during the week, with Hollywood Boulevard closed around the theatre several days before the ceremony. The parties, the dinners and the life of the week happen further west, between Beverly Hills and West Hollywood.
A good address is therefore chosen for its distance from your evenings and appointments, for the hour at which you will return, and for how you will use it: to sleep, to entertain, to prepare your outfits. The table below summarises the four approaches.

Beverly Hills: the centre of gravity of the week
Beverly Hills is a very practical address during the week: between Hollywood to the east and Santa Monica to the west, a few minutes from the private rooms and the industry's tables, with Rodeo Drive on foot. During Oscars week, these suites are in high demand, often held by the studios and agencies for their guests, with minimum stays. They are quoted according to the address, the category and the length of stay.
Bel Air: the calm of a canyon
Bel Air is the address of retreat. The Hotel Bel-Air, on Stone Canyon Road, sets its rooms and suites among gardens, away from Sunset Boulevard: you sleep in quiet, and reach Beverly Hills in a few minutes by car, outside rush hour.
It is also the neighbourhood of private villas: in the hills of Bel Air and Holmby Hills, staffed houses welcome those who wish to entertain without being seen. For a stay where discretion matters more than proximity, it is often the right answer.
West Hollywood: Sunset Boulevard and the evenings
West Hollywood, on the Sunset Strip, is the neighbourhood of the evening: restaurants, hotel bars, terraces overlooking the city. The advantage: proximity to the parties and to Hollywood. The trade-off: a livelier neighbourhood, and heavy traffic on Sunset Boulevard on party nights. For those who go out every evening, it is a good base.
The staffed villa: entertaining during the week
For a family, a group or those who entertain, a private villa is often the right answer: bedrooms for everyone, rooms for fittings, a terrace for dinner, and on the night of the ceremony, a place to watch it among those close to you.
