Where to Stay During the Salone del Mobile in Milan?

A full city, two poles — Rho and the centre: the choice of address decides your days, at the fair as in the quarters.

Last updated 6 October 2026 · 4 min read

In short

For the Salone del Mobile, the right choice depends on what you are coming to see. The centre — Brera, around La Scala and the Quadrilatero, Porta Nuova, Porta Venezia — puts the Fuorisalone a few steps away and suits those who live Design Week above all; the Grand Hotel et de Milan, on via Manzoni, opened in 1863 near La Scala, is one of its historic addresses, cited for illustration. The area around Rho brings you closer to the fair, for those spending several days there. During the week, Milan's rooms go months in advance, often with a minimum stay. When the city is full, Lake Como, about an hour away, offers a calm alternative, with a chauffeur for the journeys. Every stay is quoted on request.

01

The golden rule: two poles, and a city booked early

During Design Week, Milan receives visitors from around the world and nearly all its rooms fill up. Sought-after addresses are often booked from one year to the next; cancellation conditions tighten, and minimum stays are common.

Milan's particularity lies in the geography of the week: the fair is at Rho, to the north-west, about half an hour from the centre, while the Fuorisalone is lived in the city. So you need to choose your centre of gravity — the halls or the quarters — and accept, if necessary, widening the circle. With a chauffeur, staying on the lake is not a fallback, but a different rhythm.

The options, compared

The table below summarises the options. Hotels are cited for illustration, without partnership; their availability during the week is checked case by case.

Brera, La Scala and the Quadrilatero: at the heart of Design Week

Brera is the quarter much in demand during the week: its old streets, courtyards and galleries host a large part of the Fuorisalone, gathered under the banner of Brera Design District. Staying here lets you walk from one exhibition to the next, return to change before dinner and do without a car for much of the day.

Close by, the areas around La Scala and the Quadrilatero offer the city's grand historic hotels. The Grand Hotel et de Milan, on via Manzoni, opened in 1863, is one example, cited for illustration; its rooms for the week go very early. The other side of the coin: the bustle, and journeys to Rho to organise every morning.

04

Porta Nuova, Porta Venezia, Tortona: the contemporary city

Porta Nuova, with its recent towers and gardens, is home to contemporary hotels close to Porta Garibaldi station and to Isola, one of the more experimental Design Week quarters. Porta Venezia, further east, has in recent years become a lively hub of the Fuorisalone.

To the south-west, Tortona, the historic birthplace of the Fuorisalone, is home above all to exhibition spaces and a few addresses of character. An apartment rented for the week, with service, is also a valued option for receiving guests or for a small group.

05

Near Rho, or on the shores of Lake Como

For those devoting several days to the fair — an architect with a client, a project team —, hotels close to Fiera Milano Rho avoid the morning journeys. The atmosphere is functional; you return to the centre in the evening, with a chauffeur or by metro.

At the other end of the scale, Lake Como, about an hour from Milan, offers villas and hotels on the water's edge, in an altogether different calm. It is an elegant alternative when the city is full: a chauffeur handles the morning journeys to Rho or to the centre and the evening returns. A villa rented for the week, with staff, also lets you receive guests.

06

When to book, and how

For mid-April, autumn and early winter are the right window; addresses in Brera often go even earlier. A few weeks before the fair, you work with what remains — which, with a chauffeur, still leaves fine options on the lake. Cancellation conditions are often stricter during the week: we set them out for you before any commitment.

Our method: start from your programme — fair days, quarters, evenings — to choose between the centre, Rho and the lake, then the address, then the category. Our guide How to Get to the Salone del Mobile in Milan? completes this choice, and our guide What to Do During Milan Design Week? helps you sketch out the week.
