A direct TGV, a binational airport, Zurich an hour away: in Basel, logistics are as much about the arrival as about the evening journeys.

In short

To reach Art Basel, the simple route from Paris is the direct TGV to Basel station, in about three hours. By air, EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, a binational airport on the French side a few kilometres from the city, has a Swiss sector linked to Basel by a customs road; Zurich, about an hour away by train, offers more flights. By private jet, the EuroAirport welcomes business aviation, with several providers on site. Messe Basel is in Kleinbasel, served by tram; a dedicated chauffeur becomes essential if you are staying outside the city.

Arriving in Basel: train, plane, private jet

From Paris, TGV Lyria links the Gare de Lyon to Basel SBB station in about three hours, with several direct trains a day. It is often the simple way: you arrive in the city centre, a few minutes from the fair.

By air, EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is a case apart: a binational airport, located in France, about three and a half kilometres north-west of Basel, with a Swiss sector and a French sector. A customs road of about two and a half kilometres links it directly to the city. Zurich, further away, offers more international connections, and Basel can be reached from there in about an hour by train.

02

The EuroAirport: understanding the Swiss sector and the French sector

The EuroAirport is administered jointly by France and Switzerland. It carries three codes — BSL for the Swiss sector, MLH for the French sector, EAP for the whole — and each sector has its own controls. To reach Basel directly, you go through the Swiss sector and the customs road.

For business aviation, several providers are based on site, including Jet Aviation and Air Service Basel, with lounges and reception services. In mid-June, slots and aircraft parking are in high demand: booking is done early, and we compare aircraft and airfields according to your party and your schedule.

03

Getting around Basel: tram, walking and chauffeur

Basel is a compact city, divided by the Rhine between Grossbasel and Kleinbasel, where Messe Basel stands. The tram serves it efficiently, and many journeys are made on foot, across one of the river's bridges. During the week, the approaches to the Messeplatz are very busy during opening hours.

A dedicated chauffeur remains invaluable: he drops you as close as possible, waits for you between two appointments, takes you to the Fondation Beyeler or to the Vitra Campus, across the border, and handles the evening returns. His route sheet is reviewed every morning, with a fallback planned for each journey.

04

If you are staying outside Basel

Zurich, Alsace, Freiburg im Breisgau: staying nearby is a frequent option during the week. It calls for well-held logistics — a train chosen to arrive at opening, or a chauffeur who knows the border crossings and the busy hours, and an evening return planned from the morning.

We build your week on this principle, according to the fair days, the museums and your dinners. Our guide Where to Stay During Art Basel in Basel? helps you choose the address; our guide What to Do During Art Basel Week in Basel? helps you choose what matters.

05

Borders, documents and luggage

Basel touches France and Germany: in a single day, you can cross two borders without noticing, from the Vitra Campus to a dinner in Alsace. Keep your travel documents with you, and let us know of any particular constraints for your guests.

If you acquire a work during the fair, its transport is a matter for the gallery and its shipping agents, under the applicable customs rules; we are happy to coordinate delivery appointments with your diary, without taking part in the transaction.
