Where to Stay During Art Basel in Basel?
A small city, a full week: as close to the fair as possible, beside the Rhine, or an hour away — the choice of address shapes your days.
Last updated 5 October 2026 · 4 min read
For Art Basel, the right choice depends on your days and on availability. Kleinbasel, on the right bank of the Rhine, puts Messe Basel a few steps away. The Rhine and the old town, on the other bank, are a few minutes away by tram or car; the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, on the riverside since the seventeenth century, is its historic address, cited for illustration. Basel is a city of modest size: during the week, its rooms go months in advance, often with a minimum stay. When the city is full, Zurich, about an hour away by train, neighbouring Alsace or the Freiburg im Breisgau area, on the German side, offer fine alternatives, with a chauffeur for the journeys. Every stay is quoted on request.
The golden rule: a small city, booked early
Basel has far fewer rooms than the great capitals of art, and Art Basel week fills almost all of them. Sought-after addresses are often booked from one year to the next; cancellation conditions tighten, and minimum stays are common.
So you need to choose early, and accept widening the circle if necessary. The good news: Basel sits where Switzerland, France and Germany meet, and addresses of real quality lie an hour away or less. With a chauffeur, staying outside the city is not a second-best, but a different rhythm.

The options, compared
The table below summarises the options. Hotels are cited for illustration, with no partnership; their availability during the week is checked case by case.
| Area | Atmosphere | Distance to the fair | For whom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kleinbasel (around the Messeplatz) | Lively, at the heart of the week | A few minutes on foot | Those who want to do everything, or nearly, on foot |
| The Rhine and the old town (Grossbasel) | Historic, riverside, narrow streets | A few minutes by tram or car | Those who want the charm of the city |
| Zurich | A large city, grand hotels, the lake | About an hour by train | Those who favour choice and calm |
| Neighbouring Alsace | Countryside, houses of character | By car, variable journey | Those who love calm and fine tables |
| Freiburg im Breisgau and the Black Forest | University city, forest, villages | By car or train, to be planned | Those who combine the fair with the open air |
Kleinbasel: as close to the fair as possible
Messe Basel is in Kleinbasel, on the right bank of the Rhine. Staying in the district lets you walk to the fair, return to change between two appointments and do without a car for much of the day. Art House Basel, a member of Design Hotels, is one example of a contemporary address in the centre, cited for illustration.
The other side of the coin: the bustle, and the approaches to the Messeplatz, which are very busy during opening hours. For those seeking evening calm, the opposite bank or the surrounding area often suits better.

The Rhine and the old town
On the left bank, Grossbasel brings together the old town, its narrow streets and its riverside. The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, beside the Rhine on the Blumenrain, has welcomed travellers since the seventeenth century and has around a hundred rooms and suites, some overlooking the river; it is cited for illustration, and its rooms for the week go very early.
From there, Messe Basel is a few minutes away by tram or car, across one of the bridges over the Rhine. It is often the right balance between access and atmosphere, provided you book well in advance.
Zurich, Alsace, the Black Forest: when Basel is full
Zurich is about an hour from Basel by train, with frequent connections. It has more grand hotels, on the lakeside or on the heights of the city, and you reach the fair in the morning, by train or with a chauffeur. It is the usual alternative for those who come late to booking.
On the French side, neighbouring Alsace offers houses of character and country hotels, to be chosen according to distance; on the German side, Freiburg im Breisgau and the villages of the Black Forest combine the open air with well-regarded tables. In both cases, a chauffeur handles the morning journeys and the evening returns, border included. A house rented for the week, with staff, also allows you to entertain.

When to book, and how
For mid-June, winter and early spring are the right window; addresses in Basel itself often go earlier still. A few weeks before the fair, you work with what remains — which, with a chauffeur, still leaves fine options nearby. Cancellation conditions are often stricter during the week: we set them out for you before any commitment.
Our method: start from your programme — fair days, museums, evenings — to choose between the city and its surroundings, then the address, then the category.
