Salone del Mobile in Milan: How Do the Fair and Design Week Work?

Trade days, the public weekend, several fairs at Rho, the Fuorisalone across the city, hotels and journeys: how a week that reaches far beyond the fair actually works.

In short

The Salone del Mobile.Milano is the international furniture and design fair, founded in Milan in 1961 and organised by Federlegno Arredo Eventi at the Fiera Milano exhibition centre in Rho. Its 65th edition takes place from Tuesday 13 to Sunday 18 April 2027 and marks the return of Euroluce, the biennial of light. Professionals are admitted all week; the general public on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 April. Tickets, which are named and non-transferable, are sold by the organiser on salonemilano.it and on site. In 2026, the fair welcomed 316,342 visitors from 167 countries. Around it, the Fuorisalone — Milan Design Week, announced for 12 to 18 April 2027 — changes the whole city: exhibitions in the quarters, the majority free to enter, openings, dinners and evenings.

01

What is the Salone del Mobile?

The Salone del Mobile was born in Milan in 1961, on the initiative of the Italian furniture industry's trade federation, to make Italian furniture known. Today it is organised by Federlegno Arredo Eventi and is held every spring at Fiera Milano, the large exhibition centre in Rho, on the north-western edge of the city.

The fair brings together manufacturers, publishers and designers from around the world: furniture, lighting, kitchens and bathrooms depending on the year, office design, collectible design. People come to discover the year's new pieces, to meet publishers, to order for a project — and for the whole week that has grown up around it, in a city that then lives to the rhythm of design.

It is this week, as much as the halls at Rho, that a private visitor comes for: the Fuorisalone quarters, palazzo courtyards opened to the public, installations, dinners, evenings. This guide shows how to compose it.

The 2027 edition at a glance

The organiser has published the calendar for the 65th edition: six days at Rho, two of them open to the general public. The number of exhibitors for 2027 has not yet been published; as a point of reference, the 2026 edition brought together around 1,900 exhibitors from 32 countries and 316,342 visitors from 167 countries.

How is the fair organised?

The Salone brings several fairs together under one roof. At the centre, the Salone Internazionale del Mobile and the furnishing accessories exhibition. Around them, biennials that alternate: in odd years, as in 2027, Euroluce, devoted to light; in even years, kitchens and bathrooms. To these are added Workplace3.0, devoted to workspaces, S.Project, focused on interior design projects, and Salone Contract.

Two spaces speak particularly to a collector. Salone Raritas, created in 2026, presents collectible design, limited editions and twentieth-century design antiques, with some twenty selected exhibitors. SaloneSatellite, founded in 1998, brings together young designers: it is often there that tomorrow's names are first discovered.

For a private visit, the essentials come down to three choices: which days, which fairs first, and at what pace. The halls at Rho are vast; a well-composed day leaves time to return to a stand, to have lunch in calm and to keep some energy for the evening, in town.

The Fuorisalone: Design Week in the city

Born in the 1980s, the Fuorisalone — literally "outside the fair" — has become Milan Design Week: around a thousand events across the city, announced for 12 to 18 April 2027. Exhibitions in courtyards and palazzi, installations, showroom presentations, talks: the majority are free to enter, some by registration, a few ticketed.

Design Week is organised by quarter, each with its own character: Brera Design District, in the historic heart, Tortona, where the Fuorisalone began, 5VIE, around old streets in the centre, Isola, more experimental, and Porta Venezia. Our guide What to Do During Milan Design Week? maps it out.

Preparing your stay: accommodation, journeys, budget

Accommodation first: during the week, Milan's rooms are booked months in advance, often with a minimum stay. Brera and the centre put the Fuorisalone a few steps away; the area around Rho brings you closer to the fair; Lake Como, about an hour away, offers calm. Our guide Where to Stay During the Salone del Mobile in Milan? compares the options one by one.

Then the journeys: Milan is linked to Paris by direct trains in about seven hours, and has two airports, Linate, close to the centre, and Malpensa, further out, each with a business aviation terminal. Between Rho and the city, metro and chauffeur complement each other: our guide How to Get to the Salone del Mobile in Milan? explains how it all fits together. And finally the budget: it is quoted on request, element by element — address, length of stay, transport, chauffeurs, evenings, size of party.

And one rule that applies throughout: everything that matters is booked early. For mid-April 2027, autumn and winter are the right window; a few weeks before the fair, you work with what remains.

What to remember

The Salone del Mobile.Milano is held at Fiera Milano, in Rho, from 13 to 18 April 2027; the general public is admitted on 17 and 18 April. Tickets, which are named, are sold by the organiser; the Fuorisalone, in the city, is largely free to enter. The private experience is composed elsewhere and everywhere: prepared fair days, the design quarters, fine tables, evenings through private channels subject to availability, all supported by logistics that take account of a full city and a fair far from the centre. TGZ Conciergerie, an independent house based in Paris, with no affiliation with the Salone, Federlegno Arredo Eventi, Fiera Milano, the exhibitors or the Fuorisalone, and with no official status, orchestrates the entire stay. Every stay is quoted on request, with availability and conditions confirmed before any commitment.

Every stay is quoted on request, because it is composed: a couple spending three nights in Brera with a chauffeur does not call for the same quote as a week in a villa on the lake with receptions. What makes the budget vary: the length of stay, the address and category of accommodation, whether you stay in the city, near Rho or on the lake, the train, a flight or a private jet, the number of chauffeur days, the evenings, the size of your party and how early you book.
