Art Basel in Basel: How Do the Fair and Its Week Work?
Preview Days, public days, Unlimited, Parcours, satellite fairs, hotels and journeys: how a week that reaches far beyond the fair actually works.
Last updated 5 October 2026 · 6 min read
Art Basel is the modern and contemporary art fair founded in Basel in 1970, on the initiative of the city's gallerists, and now owned by the Swiss group MCH Group. It is held every June at Messe Basel, on the Messeplatz in Kleinbasel. In 2027, the Preview Days take place on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 June, by VIP card; the public days run from Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 June. The 2026 edition brought together 290 galleries from 43 countries and territories and some 90,000 visitors. Tickets are sold by the fair through its online ticket shop; VIP cards, which are named, are issued by Art Basel and by galleries and cannot be bought. Around the fair, the week brings together Unlimited, Parcours, satellite fairs such as Liste, the museums of the region, dinners and evenings.
What is Art Basel?
Art Basel was founded in Basel in 1970, on the initiative of three of the city's gallerists, Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner and Balz Hilt. Today it belongs to the Swiss group MCH Group, which organises it. The fair has other editions around the world — Miami Beach since 2002, Hong Kong since 2013, Paris since 2022 — but it is in Basel, every June, that it was born and to which it returns.
The fair brings together modern and contemporary art galleries from around the world: masterpieces of the twentieth century, historical rediscoveries, contemporary and emerging scenes. People come to look, to meet gallerists, to acquire — and for the whole week that has grown up around it, in a city where art holds a singular place.
It is this week, as much as the halls of Messe Basel, that a private visitor comes for: the monumental works of Unlimited, the installations of Parcours in the streets, the satellite fairs, the museums, the dinners, beside the Rhine. This guide shows how to compose it.

The 2027 edition at a glance
Art Basel has announced the calendar for the 2027 edition: two Preview Days, reserved for VIP cardholders, then four public days. The number of exhibitors for 2027 has not yet been published; as a point of reference, the 2026 edition brought together 290 galleries from 43 countries and territories. The fair is held at Messe Basel, whose new hall, designed by the Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron and inaugurated in 2013, spans the Messeplatz.

How is the fair organised?
At the heart of the fair, the galleries' booths bring together modern art, post-war art and contemporary work. Alongside them, Unlimited, created in 2000, fills an entire hall of Messe Basel with large-scale projects — installations, monumental sculpture, large murals, video. It is often what a visitor remembers first, and it deserves half a day on its own.
Outside the halls, Parcours spreads site-specific installations, sculptures and performances through public space and historic venues close to the fair; in 2026, the sector unfolded along the Clarastrasse. Art Basel adds commissions on the Messeplatz, a talks programme and, since 2026, Zero 10, devoted to digital art.
For a private visit, it comes down to three choices: which days, which sectors first, and at what pace. A well-composed fair day leaves time to return to a booth, to have lunch away from the bustle and to keep some energy for the evening. Art Basel also offers guided tours in several languages, for which the admission ticket is not included.

Art Basel week: what happens around the fair
A whole week has grown up around Art Basel. Satellite fairs open at the same time: Liste, the international fair for emerging contemporary art, runs from 14 to 20 June 2027 in Hall 1.1 of Messe Basel; others, such as Volta or Photo Basel, each publish their own dates.
Add to these the institutions of the region, which often prepare their exhibitions for the week: the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, in a building by Renzo Piano, the Kunstmuseum Basel in the city centre, the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, in Germany, a few minutes away by tram — cited for illustration. And a second programme, that of the galleries and collectors: dinners, receptions, private evenings, usually by invitation. Our guide What to Do During Art Basel Week in Basel? maps it out.
Planning your stay: accommodation, journeys, budget
Accommodation first: Basel is a city of modest size, and during the week its rooms are booked months in advance, often with a minimum stay. Kleinbasel puts the fair a few steps away; the Rhine and the old town, a few minutes. When the city is full, Zurich, Alsace or the Freiburg im Breisgau area take over. Our guide Where to Stay During Art Basel in Basel? compares the options one by one.
Journeys next: Basel is about three hours from Paris by direct TGV, an hour from Zurich by train, and EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, on the French side, is a few kilometres from the centre, with business aviation services. Once there, tram, walking and chauffeur complement one another: our guide How to Get to Art Basel in Basel? explains how it works. And finally the budget: it is set on a bespoke quote, element by element — address, length of stay, transport, chauffeurs, evenings, size of party.
And one rule that applies throughout: everything that matters is booked early. For mid-June 2027, winter and early spring are the right window; a few weeks before the fair, you work with what remains.

What to remember
Art Basel is held at Messe Basel: Preview Days on 15 and 16 June 2027, by VIP card, public days from 17 to 20 June. Tickets are sold through the fair's online ticket shop; VIP cards cannot be bought. The private experience is composed elsewhere and everywhere: Unlimited, Parcours, satellite fairs, museums, fine tables, evenings through private channels subject to availability, all supported by logistics that take into account a city that is small and full. TGZ Conciergerie, an independent house based in Paris, with no affiliation with Art Basel, MCH Group, the galleries or the satellite fairs, and with no official status, orchestrates the entire stay. Every stay is quoted on request, with availability and conditions confirmed before any commitment.

A sector of Art Basel created in 2000, installed in an entire hall of Messe Basel, which presents large-scale projects: installations, monumental sculpture, murals, video. It is visited with the fair ticket and often deserves half a day.
A full day lets you cover the main booths; add half a day for Unlimited and a walk for Parcours. Many visitors devote two days to the fair and the rest of the week to the satellite fairs and museums. We compose that rhythm with you.
Every stay is quoted on request, because it is composed: a couple spending three nights beside the Rhine with a chauffeur does not call for the same quote as a week in a private house with receptions. What makes the budget vary: the length of stay, the address and category of accommodation, whether you stay in Basel or nearby, the train, a flight or a private jet, the number of chauffeur days, the evenings, the size of the party and how early you book.
